If I run on the treadmill for 30 minutes and keep my heart rate between 165 and 170 is that a good work out.. I am a 42 year old male

yes... but you should wear a heart monitor (sold at most sporting goods as well as in sporting goods section of say a Target...) it will come with instructions for your age group and where you should be 'at' ... you don't mention your weight so not sure if that's high enough but sounds about right... also, you should alternate between running at a fast pace (say level 7) and lower (between 3 -5) in intervals through your workout - it's better for increasing your phyiscal endurance and will also help with weightloss or conditioning..

Yes, but really anything over 140 is considered a good workout. A heart rate between 165 and 170 is pretty fast. Everyone's cardiovascular system is difffernt, yours might respond better to that rate of heartbeat.

sounds good. try varying your pace. like jogging for a few, then going faster, then faster, and faster still, then work your way back down. i might take longer but, it burns like crazy. thats how you know its working.
