It's probably best for ANYONE who wants to take up running to start off with walking. We tend to overestimate our fitness levels, and this can lead to injuries.
Even if you are not overweight, you can still be out of shape. There are a couple of Couch to 5K programs on the internet... I recommend the two below.

i would suggest power walking and walking backwards to start, once a considerable amount of weight has been taken off, then running/jogging can take place.
The real consideration is your joints, can they handle the pounding? A good pair of supportive shoes and a soft track would allow a faster pace, but it would be counterproductive to go out and run and cause injury, and prolong weight loss results. Perhaps a trampoline maybe something worth looking into. You can get a basic one for $20-$30.
Great luck in reaching your goals.
Blessings!

Moderation would be best when it comes to the running and jogging. They put a lot of stress on our joints, knees, ankles etc. I would sujjest speed walking. A good rule of thumb is that if you are doing something and you can not carry on a conservation then you need to slow down. if you are to out of breath to talk while doing it take it down a level. Speed walking is better on your body and is just as effective and you will be able to do it longer than running or jogging, thus burning more calories.

start with whatever u'r capable of..don't force ur body..i do however have a friend who was an obese and she jogged her way to a much slender figure now..but a much safer way would be to start off with walking..it's much safer and better for ur body and especially for ur heart..if u feel ur body can handle it a bit more add some jogging to the walking..u will build ur stamina along the way and i bet after some time u can jog all the way to success..u don't have to wait until u've lost some weight to start jogging/running..goodluck!!

Obese or skinny, walking or swimming is the best excercise for getting the heart rate going and getting started on some type of regular ex. routine - I hope you get started right away - before summer hits and the clothes have to come off - ya know? :)

I would not advise anyone to start running and jogging all at once. Start at your own pace!!. It would be good to consult with your doctor before you start. It all depends on how "obese" the person is and what their goals are with the excersise.

they should walk until total body weight is reduced. with out knowing the specifics of the total body weight, past level of exercise, etc. it's hard to determine.
since obesity is determined by the body fat percentage a person can be "obese" but not have a very high total body weight.
