I've been on a workout plan for five years now and the best results so far have been when I do short workouts (about an hour) 4-5 times a week. You switch up the muscle groups at each workout and throw in some cardio if you can. The twice a week full body workout might give you some results but its probably doing more harm than good for a lot of reasons im not gonna get in to. I don't see why adding pushups would hurt anything though, might even help.

Push-ups/sit-ups every other day....
Try to do 20-30 push-ups then alternate right after with 20-30 sit-ups for several sets....You will build muscle and endurance...just like in the military

never do the same exercise every day - exception is cardio and you can get away with sit ups.. but as a rule you need to give the muscle worked a day off... you should check w/a trainer at your gym for a program - he/she shouldn't charge you - they're there not only to train people but to educate and if you ask them they should be able to give you the basics ie: chest/back one day, arms the next etc...
