I went to the doctors after having a headache for well over a week. He said i had sinusitis and gave me antibiotics, pain killers and a nasal spray. Yet still after 5 days of medication i still have a really bad headache. How long do you think i should put up with this pain in my head before i need to think about going back to the doctors?

I would think you would see improvement after five days, your infection apparently is quite severe. To ease the headache, try this. Wet a washcloth, wring it out some and put in the microwave, nuke for about 2minutes. Remove, it will be VERY HOT! Let it cool enough to place on your face, cheekbones, forehead. Lay back and relax, the deep moist heat will cause the sinus cavities to open and drain. Good luck.

Typically antibiotic are prescribed for a period of 7 to 10 days of treatment. If you used Zithromax or a Z-pack it could be as short as 5 days. You have 3 obvious options.

Continue the medication until the course of the antibiotics is completed and then contact your doctor if there is no improvement.

If you have a 5 day Z-pack then call the doctor and inform him/her of the situation.

If you have a 7-10 course and the pain is bad...call the doctor and let him/her know.

Me....I'd give the doctor's nurse a call, inform her of your condition ask ask for the doctor to advise you further. Why? I'd be concerned that that I was still experiencing sinus pain even with the use of pain killers. Especially if the pain killer was a Tussenex product.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

How many days medication did you get? That is how long you should wait. If you complete your course and the symptoms have not cleared then go back, you may simply require another course of antibiotics, I have had 3 for my last bout of illness. The bugs are becoming immune to antibiotics through overuse and it can take a while for a bad case to clear.

Sinus infections are difficult to treat as it is difficult for the antibiotics to reach the area where they are needed. If haven't tried inhaling steam this can be very helpful, it may also help to try lay wih your head tilted backwards when you can, as this my help the fluid to drain from your sinuses. Give the antibiotics a few more days then you may need to go back to your GP.

Just like a scenario where you didn't like who the gardener didn't care for your flowers properly, go back and ask the doctor what is up with this. If you don't like the gardener, you would get another one. right? Perhaps you need a new doctor.
