What direction does the current conscensus lean towards? I've read and heard so much, tried everything from SSRI's to drugs for restless leg syndrome. The thing that has worked best thusfar is physical therapy. Is there any news on the forefront for me and my fellow sufferers?

Probably the most current research relates it to neurotransmitter levels...decreased sensitivity to neurotransmitters that make us feel good, increase in neurotransmitters that make us feel pain. That is the reason for the use of SSRI's...but others are involved other than seratonin...substance P and norepinephrine levels are also altered.

However, there are features of it that appear autoimmune. The evidence of chronic inflammation is such a feature.

I am glad to hear that you have found relief with PT. Part of PT should include low impact cardiovascular exercise as this is thought to regulate the levels of neurotransmitters.

Best wishes.

It has been shown to be neuromusculaoskeletal in nature meaning that it affects the joints, nerves, and muscles. It is thought that some people with fibromyalgia are low on a kind of substance called Substance P but I've not seen any newer studies to correlate with this.

It is true that like the other poster said that fibro and CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) go hand in hand. CFS was just acknowledged as an actual disease by the Centers for Disease Control which tells me that I don't think it will be much longer before fibro gets that same recognition.

The Fibromyalgia Awareness Network is also trying to stay up to date on these things and there is a newsletter from about.com that you can check out for more info too. The link to that is: http://www.chronicfatigue.about.com

Your rheumatologist or primary care physician may be able to help you find even more info on the new stuff going on with understanding fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a disease that has long been misunderstood. It's been addressed more in recent years, and appears to be associated with another condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome -- the two seem to go hand in hand. Doctors are still uncertain as to the cause of this painful and debilitating condition, but many advances have been made in its successful treatment, insofar as pain management. It appears to attack the joints and connective tissue on certain areas of the body. Keep checking with your health care professional. Every day, new discoveries are made in the care of this and other mysterious disease for which causes are unknown or uncertain. Eventually there may be drugs that can treat or cure fibromyalgia.

I believe that you can cure a tremendous amount of it with drinking 1 quart of water for every 50lbs of body weight every day and my newest discovery is the effect that fungus has on our body.
In some circles fungus is belived to be cancer and also cause the body to malfunction in a host of ways from dizziness to heart palpitations. My site for natural heath is http://www.YourChildrenNaturally.com and is directed towards pregnancy - you should look for a book "The Fungus Link" By Doug Koughman
