I asked my mother, who is an atheist, this question and she said she 'had no clue' and agreed that 'it was odd'.

Because... atheists have read the Bible too? I mean, that's pretty simple, isn't it?

Why wouldn't an atheist quote it? I'm sure Christians quote Lord of the Rings once in a while... you're not going to tell me that they shouldn't do that because they don't believe in Hobbits, are you?

If you're talking about theological debate, this is an excellent way of arguing. Atheists and theists have fundamentally different points of views, and therefore some arguments which make sense to one group won't to the other. However, if atheists can effectively refute a theist's argument using the theist's own source material, it speaks to the strength of that argument. In more common terms, it's like beating someone at their own game.

In other contexts, biblical quotes can serve the same purpose as other allusions. The fact that atheists don't consider the bible holy does not take away from its significance as a literary work. Many books have great value to society without being considered infallible.

I am thinking maybe its just that they simply enjoy the quote and the meaning behind it.

I am not a Christian (but I do believe in God) however, I have found myself quoting the Bible on more than one occassion. I enjoy the moral messages behind the scriptures. I actually just sent out a great quote from the Scriptures to all my friends yesterday. No matter what religion I believe that there are very good messages in the Bible that every person should learn.

I think that sometimes people forget that Athiest have morals. I am not one so I cant really speak for them...but that is my two cents : ).

No matter where you are around the world humanitarian laws are all based on the Mosiac Laws given to Moses by Jehovah God.

Laws of cleanlyness, Laws of the universe, and if Columbus would of read and believed in the Bible he would have found out through Job that the Earth is round Job.26:10 Isaiah 40:22
Prov 8:27 and that the Bible is scientifically accurate.

Why would an atheist want to reject the word of God before reading it first? I challenge all atheist to read the Scriptures! Start at least with the book of John in the New Testament and then start at the front. From Genesis to Revelation it is all about Jesus Christ. I would not have rejected evolution before I read all about it. I never liked the monkey to man chart but the "Big Bang" reminded me of God instantly bringing everything in the universe into existence.

Most atheists have read the Bible. Several times, in fact. We quote the scriptures because we're always having it quoted at us, most times taken out of context, and inappropriate to the argument the quoter is trying to present. People seem to assume we don't know the Bible, so they try to use it as a weapon. That is not a wise move, because a lot of atheists know the Bible better than you would ever expect.

An atheist generally quotes the scriptures to prove their point about contradiction and the lack of critical thinking by those who take every word in the Bible literally. Many of them have more knowledge about the Bible than Christians.

And no - I'm not an atheist, I'm Deist :).

Depends on the purpose for which the atheist is quoting the scriptures. People quote sources for different reasons eh?

In many cases, to point out the absurdity of them.

I'm an atheist, and I've read the Bible start to finish, but I'm somewhat envious of my fellow non-believers who can quote scriptures so quickly. I just don't retain information like that.
