I am from Jamaica and I hear all this stuff about America being land of the Free...?? If you were all free, why can't a gay couple get married? Yeah its against the bible but if your Free - You should be able to believe in what you want to believe in - It seems to me that you have to follow the bible and there is nothing wrong with that but what about people that dont follow it?!? If you were the land of the free shouldn't you be able to marry who ever you want - I don't understand - Don't think that I am bashin the US because I have been there and it IS a wonderful place but somethings I just don't understand. Oh and what about smoking pot?? Thats a natural thing - ???

I know. I live in Italy but I'm American cause my mum is, and I was just asking the same question the other day. Land of the free...but? why can't two people of the same sex marry? why can't one decide to put an end to his own life if he's hopelessly stricken by a serious illness? why can't I drink a beer at 18, but I can go and fight a damn war in Iraq and die at the same age? why is cannabis banned when we all know it isn't more damaging than alcohol?
I wish I knew the answer...but I haven't given up on the States yet. Hopefully if a Democrat gets elected in 2008, some things will change & change for the better.

You are a very intriguing person. We are free to have others push thier beliefs on us, free to do what we want as long as our gov't and/ or the majority like the people doing said action. You are from Jamaica and probably too laid back and open minded for me to give you a simple explanation.
On a serious note: Basically we are free to do what we want as long as we don't infringe upon the rights of others to life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness. This can be interpreted very loosely.
--The Gay Marriage thing has to do with a combination of Religion and Insurance. Mormons can't practice polygomy either. That's probably a good thing. One wife is tough enough.

You know, it's not a Christianity thing. It's a way of thinking. You're free unless you go against the majority. Go back to simpler things... The Dixie Chicks are no longer played on country radio stations because they RIGHTFULLY spoke out against Bush. Free speech my foot. You go against the majority, and you're alienated. That's the American way!

There is no such thing as a completely free society. Every society imposes restrictions (good or bad) on its behavior. We are called the Land of the Free because we tend to have more freedom in important areas (religion, expression, speech, press, etc) than most other countries. It's a relative, not absolute term.

The governments have been placed here on earth temporarily so that some form of order is upheld.
America is considered a "free" country, but people cannot be given total freedom to do as they please. If that were the case, there would be endless murders, thefts and all kinds of chaos.
We have certain freedoms and rights, but we still need laws. We need traffic laws to govern how we drive, Think of what could happen if people were not required to have a license to drive or if there were no age restrictions. We have stop signs and traffic lights for a good reason.
Free will is a gift from God, but we should not abuse the priviledge. God's laws are a protection against divorce, unwanted pregnancies, broken homes, diseases and crime, but only if we obey them.

The only time it is acceptable for Christians to disobey a governmental law, is if it conflicts with God's law.

If thats your arguement, then youre saying anyone should be ableto do abslutely anything.

One could also argue, what about the freedom of our future generations, and the confusion allowing same sex marriages would create for them. It would take away parents freedom to honour the sanctity of a man female wedding.

If gay marriages were married, then our children will grow up thinking its okay to have there first date as a teenager with someone the same sex, because its okay and everyones doing it.

So Id say youre arguement doesnt hold up.
I have the american government behind me on this one -- and the american majority as well

P.S. Dorkmobile -- the U.S. is how many trillions of dollars in debt? We are not the richest country in the world. That bush and his republican goons for that

America was based on Christian principles, even tho many today will say that is not so. It is so, and we were to be free , free to be who we are, and free from sin. thats Gods desire too. If we do as we darn well pleased with no rights to another, how then can they be free? Free doesnt mean doing all you want. Then you step on somone elses freedom, and out country is pretty much like that today as people for the most part have turned their backs on God and All He said about how to think and to live. and act. If two gay men can marry and then adopt a child.. what about that child that has rights to grow up with a mommy and daddy? So much more in the picture that you arent even considering. God doesnt make anyone follow the Bible, and the devil doent make anyone sin, both lead us their direction and its their choice what we believe. Believers arent making the world like it is today. Those that want to do whatever they please with no regard to anyone else, those are the ones that ruin the world with such open sin, disprect for God, self and everyone else.
And a gay couple can so give their vows, we just say it shouldnt be legalized by the state. What if a man wants to marry a sheep and is into beastiality and yes there are ppl like that. Do we legalize that too. where does it stop. Noone says that ppl cant live with and have sex with whoever they please, they ahve freedoms, but dont ask the state to bless that union and let it cost the rest of us so much. If gay ppl can suddenly collect all the moneys of their mate that died, what do you think that will do to the insurance companies, and to Social security, it will break us. already is, with all those on drugs stating their rights to do so. People better be waking up and smelling the coffee, cuz we are all losing rights all over the place. We were made to be free from sin. not free to sin. You can all do as you pleae, just dont ask us to pay for it all. What about the guy wnting to marry a 8 yr old and stating its his right, his religion. Should he be free to do that. There has to be laws man or this place would go even more insane than it already is. When ppl turned their backs on God, this is where it went, and always goes. Look at Sodom and Gommoreah. We are headed there soon again.
Smoking pot? YOu want the right to do drugs. at my expense. Alcohol shouldnt be legal either or cigarettes, as the govt knows the dangers. Yet, try to get a new health food supliment approved and its a forever thing, MUST proove it is safe first. Oh wake up american. Its obvious where we are heading. Soon you must be either fully Gods or you are fully Not Gods at all.
Choice is yours. choose wisely and choose today.

Land of the free my @ss.
We have the government tapping our phones. Bush trying to pass the other part of the patriot act to implant rice sized tracking chips in all the citizens.

We havn't been free for 200 years. we've become big brother consperacy. Most of the outside world doesn't know about the corrupt government. They hide themselves better than the other countries. Some of our own citizens deny it.
