My cat had this problem and the vet prescribed food that cost $.80 per can AND I had to feed the cat three times a day. After realizing that this was way too expensive I went to petsmart and found a PH balanced cat food that worked fine. He's not had any problems since, and I saved a few bucks. I'm positive that they make PH balanced dog food. There are probably several diff. brands. Tell your friend to just read the labels.

Protein in urine may indicate some problem in the bladder, like an infection. Other than that it is not so worrying. So have the dog's urine analysed to see if he's OK, and apart from that just give him good food, I guess, or ask the vet what he should eat.

Protein in urine is normally a sign that the kidneys aren't functioning correctly and the protein is being passed undigested into the urinary tract. A low protein diet would be recommended in this case (this would be the same if a human was having the same problem).

Protein in the urine means he'll need to feed his dog something that is easy on the kidneys.

So I would buy a food that is made for senior dogs. (Lots available here UK)

The senior food puts less stress on the kidneys.

Hope that helps.

My cat had this problem. You want a food that is chicken or beef (perhaps lamb or duck) that has reduced amounts of magnesium. I found that Pro Plan (purina) actually had less magnesium than science diet.
