This web site can hook you up with a support group in your area. Tourettes is somewhat rare and difficult to diagnose, so there may not be many others in your area with TS.

Since you have placed this question in the "mental health" category, I'd like to take a moment and let you know that Tourettes is not a mental illness. It is Neurological, or to be more specific, Neurobiological. Think of it like this: There is nothing wrong with your child's software (mental). Your child's hardware, however, is not connected properly and causes your tics.(Brain, nervous system, brain stem, ect.) Tourettes does not impede intelligence or ability to learn.

I don't know that I would consider the things you mentioned as a disability, however, I tend to use the "labels" given to my son as necessary to get him the help he needs. Here, in the California school system, he is listed as "other health impaired" in order to participate in special ed and speech programs and services.

You might also try meetup.com to find others in you area with similar situations, however, it is total strangers so take precautions.

Best wishes and feel free to email me through this web site.

Children's disabilities, like tourettes, can best be explored through your school counselor. (I worked in a school for handicapped kids, and worked with kids with this disorder). Learning to live with the odd sounds and motions can be a real challange. It can be difficult to know what behaviors can be controlled, and which cannot. Your goal is to raise your child to be as normal as possible to fit-in with other people. Your public school counselor, or district office may be your best source. If unsuccessful, call children's hospitals for information.

every city has a local mental health center. There is often group therapy for children and adolescents. I find this a positive thing, because, like you said... it will let him see that there are other children out there like him and that he is not alone. Good luck.

it is not a website but your local doctor or health clinic is suppose to provide you with information on support groups related to the conditions. if your doctor does not know check with your local heatlh region. Hope this helps.
