the only way it works is in French with French subtitles.
French is easier when read...If doesn't make you fluent (I believe that only an extended stay in the country where it is spoken will do that to you), it will train your ear, expend your vocabulary, and if you don't remember all the words, it is fine!
If you get only one word it is always one more than before!

if you watch English movies with French subtitles, you will end up ignoring the subtitles, if you watch French movies with English subtitles, you will end up focusing on the writing!

What's the deal if you don't understand everything?
that's why the rewind button is for!

you can rent for example: "a very long engagement", "amelie", "With a friend like Harry", "The taste of the Others"
They are all available at Block Buster or Netflix.
The actors speak a fluid French, there is not too much slang and the stories are quite good actually.

French with english subtitles. You are more likely to be speaking to people than reading.
Hearing it spoken will help you sort out the sounds/phrasing of common sentences.

Yes! It's very good idea! I see films with Spanish subtitles and listen Cuban radios and I've learned a very much new word including a lot of words that teachers don't teach in schools.
