My cat has swollen, sometimes bloody sores, or abcesses on his mouth right under his nose. They don't seem to hurt him. I have taken him to the vet where they give him a shot of some sort of steiroid. This seems to help at first, but the sores keep comming back. The vet said that she didn't know exactly what they were, but that they were caused by allergies. She suggested that he could be allergic to fleas, but my cat is an indoor cat and he has no fleas. I was wondering if anyone out there has had experience with this problem before, and if so, are there any good home remedies? Going to the vet and paying $60.00 for one shot is getting rediculous.

OK calm down. My cat suffers from them all the time. Some things that reduce the occurrence are steal bowls and keep them clean. Sometimes I put some anti biotic cream on them. If they get real bad that is when I take them to the vet. One thing I noticed was when I moved we got rid of the wall to wall carpet and it seemed to reduce the frequency. Most likely nasty stuff in the rugs that were bothering the skin. Other wise not much to do. Poor baby kitty. Try the link

Shar is right - get a second vet opinion! If it IS allergies, considering the location, it sounds like he's reacting to something he's sniffing. One of mine likes to sniff things so thoroughly he buries his nose in whatever it is. Is he getting into something around the house? Plants of any kind (although you'd expect problems with ingestion at that point)? Insulation (like in an unfinished wall or attic)? Have you tried changing brands of cat litter? Try to keep an eye on him to see what his activities are. And again, like Shar suggests... Get another vet opinion ASAP! Until you can nail down the problem, just treating the symptoms (with the shots) doesn't do much good IMO.

Sounds like it is time for a second opinion..try another vet. Have had to do this before myself. Once a vet wanted to remove my cat's eye because he said it was so badly damaged there was no chance. Went to another vet..he gave meds that cleared it right up. Vets can make mistakes too. There is a valid reason for the sores and i doubt seriously it is related to allergies or fleas.

it could be a allergic reaction. do you use ceramic, stainless steal or plastic food/water dishes? if you use plastic, it is probably that. also even if your cat is totally indoor, he could still get fleas. we had a flea outbreak one year and our cat is totally indoor. the vet said we could have been where fleas were nad they hitched a ride on us right to our cat. if switching food bowls does not help get a second opinion
