Some prescription drugs warrant regular monitoring by your doctor, like Accutane. Or if you are taking an anti-depressant, your doctor may want to see you before you get a refill just to see how you are doing. Lastly, many prescription drugs are controlled substances and regulated by the DEA, therefore your doctor may not be able to give you refills or is limited on the number of refills they can provide.

Your doctor obviously wants to see you again before prescribing more. Just a check and balance. I have been taking the same prescription for almost 20 years not and every year I need to see my doctor to get another round of refills. No big deal.
