You might be able to claim both of them. If you can claim either or both, you can file as head of household.

Since your sis is under 19, as long as she lived with you for over half the year and she doesn't provide more than half of her own support, you can claim her as a qualifying child.

If you provided more than half of your mother's support, and her gross income is under $3300 for the year, you can claim her also,as a qualifying relative. SSI doesn't count toward the $3300 income limit, but if she used it for her own support, you do have to count it when calculating whether you provided over half of her support for the year.

You can claim them both as dependants provided they had little or no income and you provided at least 50% of their support. Your sister can be claimed even with income since she is a minor, but your mother must have made less than $3,300 in gross income.

This will qualify you to file as Head of Household also.

I would think so. As long as they lived with you the whole year and you can prove you provide more than 50% for both of their needs. I would call H & R Block for advice though.. They will give it to you free. You can use TaxAct.com to file your taxes and can do it for free or pay just a little to add your business. You will have to file a schedule C for the business part. It is cheaper than going to H & R Block and having them do it for you. Make sure you think of all the deductions for your business. That way your tax bill is not so bad. Anything you bought for your business to run is deductable.

Based on the information you have provided you can claim both your sister and mother as tax dependents. It appears you provide more than half the support to both, so you are entitled to the additional exemptions. In addition, you are entiltled to report as "head of household" instead of "single". Take the bigger standard deduction.

The only concern I do have is, and certainly is none of my business, is, where is your father? If your father files tax returns, you must make sure with him that he does not
claim either you, your sister or your Mom as a dependent on his return. You cannot
claim the same exemptions twice on separate returns.

If he does claim you, etc., you must report that you are being claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, you cannot claim Head of Household and your taxes will be substantially bigger.

I believe you can claim them both as dependents if you provide at least 50% of their living expenses.
