He REALLY freaks out when you try to do it because one time he got them trimmed at the vet and they split one of them and it became infected. I know how to do it myself but don't want him crying, howling, and especially jerking and biting. What about Benydryl?

My vet has recommended giving my dog a 1/4 tablet of Benadryl before. My dog is almost 8 lbs. You could always call your local vet and see how much they would recommend giving to a dog of your's size.

I wouldn't give him ANYTHING before you check with a vet. I'd rather just take mine to a groomer for around $10 than to worry about my dog having an allergic reaction.

Its a shame his nail was spit and infected before. I wish I could help more than this, but giving dogs people medicine is really tricky...

Check with your vet before you give a dog anything. Why don't you just take him to Petsmart? They'll do it for $8. Or the vet usually will do it for free during a visit.

Put a muzzle on him, tie him up and just do it. There is no OTC medication that will calm him down enough, anything that will do the trick is dangerous for you to use. Let him throw his bratty temper tantrum, explain to him that you're going to clip his nails and you don't really care whether he likes it or not. He'll get used to it if he knows he has to.

Either that or take him to a groomer or vet that will get the job done.

How about teaching the dog that he really does not have a choise on the matter and that YOU are the one who decides on when, where and how he gets his nails cut. A little training can go a long way. And of course establishing yourself as the alpha leader in the house would not hurt either.

Call your vet or pharmasist and ask if it would do any harm in giving benadryl or gravol to your dog. I would likely use gravol...maybe childrens gravol?
