Yeah, this is a serious question, so I don't need to look on a label. I want to keep 2 or 3 chickens so we can have fresh, untainted supermarket eggs to eat. Problem is, I've no idea how long you can keep them before they go off. I know eventually they will start to smell, but I've often wondered how old eggs are that you can buy off the shelves. Anyone know please?

You can actually store fresh eggs at room temperature for about a week. If you store them in the refrigerator, you can keep them therefor as long as 6-8 weeks before they become old.

Providing you eat a lot of eggs you should be okay, we had eight hens and we were giving them away as we had a glut. With three hens you'll average at 18 per week, if you are frying the bigger they spread (just like the supermarket) the less fresh they are. You'll be amazed how many you can get in a frying pan without them touching when they're a day old.

Eggs purchased from a refrigerated case can be refrigerated in their original carton for at least 4 to 5 weeks. Eggs deteriorate more in one day at room temperature than during one week in the refrigerator
