Take a glass of water and stick a spoon, straw whatever in it. It'll appear as if it bends at the water's surface. This is due to refraction. If you're standing in shallows and spearing fish or flounder jigging, you have to take it into consideration or you'll never hit what you're aiming for.

Refraction of the water makes the fish appear at a different angle than is actually the case.

refraction of the waters surface means that the fish is not where you think it is. so if you aim directly for it you will miss.
