depends on the jet size, jet type, flight length, destination, any extra services that are required (eg Customs, Catering, Transport etc)

Charter jet companies can give you quotes if you contact them.

If you and 6 or 7 friends split the cost it can be cheaper (at times) than a first class ticket on a major airline, and you have the flexibility to fly when you want and from where you want and to where you want (within limits, asking to fly from LHR or JFK during a busy period will have you refused - slots are controlled by airlines).

I assume you are talking about aircraft charter? You can look at this site which has one ways and round trips for charters:

Yes, they are insane prices. I just checked a one way from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles in 30 days time. Prices ranged from:

$22,000-$110,000, depending on the size of the jet. Of course, international flights are even more.

Most people who 'own' a plane actually lease the plane and fly a certain number of hours a year (in which they pay a 'per hour' use fee in addition to the annual lease). For example, the entry level cost to join a lease membership is $50,000 on this site and goes upto $1,000,000.

Now, if you are talking a 'business class' seat on a schedule airline, they are cheaper (but still can be a lot). For example, a roundtrip in business class on British Air from Washington to London is about $4,000, though sometimes you can get a budget fare of $2,000. First class from Washington to LAX (one way) is around $1000 or so.

Have you considered calling the airline that runs these flights and asking them? This is usually the best method of obtaining information of this type, wouldn't you think?
