ok i'm going for the pit first i love them and well because poodles are high maintance and with baby coming brushing the dog is going to be the last thing on ur mind....plus yes i would laugh at u and so would my hubby.... both can be great with kids. al it takes in the right training and u, wife and baby yes baby being leader. we have 2 kids and 2 dogs mutts...of strong breed dogs throw in to the lab...which makes themok for me cause i'm not a lab fan...they are not the great family pets everyone thinks they are...

but it goes by both of those dogs temperment...i think u need something laid back and not hyper or aggressive in anyway... so if u can't agree look some more...pick a mutt their great.

I think I would suggest getting neither of these two breeds. The first one is really big to have around a baby and would be high maintenance too, just in a different way. The second would need all sorts of grooming and looks ridiculous, not to mention that poodles are very high strung and can be obnoxious. If you want a small dog and don't care about it being purebred, I would recommend a Shih-Tzu and Toy poodle mix, called a Shih-poo. They do not need the grooming that either of these two breeds would need if it were purebred and are extremely inteligent but not high strung. My family has had two of these kinds of dogs (as well as others) and we love them.
If you want something bigger, I would suggest a Border Collie. They are very beautiful, very intelligent, and very loyal. Not to mention that their grooming is also less than that of a standard poodle.
If you are set on one of those two breeds then I would say that it would probably be best to not even get a dog. Having either would present too many problems with your child and potentially your marriage.

Wait til the baby is born before you decide on getting a dog. You won't have the time or the energy to handle a new dog & a new baby at once.
If your going to have a dog around children get it as a pup & get it trained. Also think of the maintanence of the dog, brushing & bathing. And the size, any dog can do serious damage to a human especially if your adopting one where your not sure if the history on it is correct.
Look more into the dogs breed & what the were bred for & make your choice from that other than the looks of the dog.

Out of the two i might decide for the great dane, if it is not a organic Dane and it has dogo argentine or pit as various the different persons have reported then bypass away it on my own. yet ordinary neither on account which you have a toddler on the way and now and back canines get jealous and it would kinda be unfair to easily sell off the canines because of fact a newborn got here alongside. I artwork at a canines pound and it happens alot. I propose waiting till the toddler is born after which whilst the youngster is two to 5 months and you already know the way busy you're with the youngster to get a domestic dog or a canines that has been around babies. If the two of the two canines has been around babies then pick that one, or get the canines arranged for the toddler now. Danes are candy yet no longer consistently conscious of there length, poodles are ok, and characteristic low dander and don't shed, yet ordinary it would be suited to attend because of fact there are alot of issues that should arise after the toddler is born. Oh, and pit bulls make solid relatives pets too, in spite of the undeniable fact that it extremely is suited to get a domestic dog, because of fact if there's a toddler you certainly ought to confirm the canines hasen't been abused.

I'm really torn here; both dogs are "high maintenence" if you will...the Pit needs tons of socializtion & training & a strong, confident Alpha owner, and the Standard Poodle (that is a Standard, right?) needs ton of grooming by an experienced groomer to keep it in that Continental show cut!!! Also, both breeds have many good qualities if well bred & well trained, despite what one may heard about both breeds! I guess my answer to your question is another question: Why the hurry to adopt a dog which will require so much of your time & energy, that could be better spent on the upcoming birth of your new baby? Believe me, that's a full time job...just asking......

LOL! If I saw a guy with a standard poodle I'd laugh too!:D Those guys that show them really make me wonder sometimes... I would definitely go with the pit bull. You'll save a lot of money grooming, and despite the rumors circulating around Pit Bulls, they are the sweetest most gentle dogs, its just their strong and natural instinct to defend and protect you. Often times its the owners fault with the ones that are attacking people. They are a very strong willed breed and need proper training to raise them right. You best bet is to get one as a puppy and bring it up. You'll also have to do some good hard searching to find one that doesn't have any fighting bloodlines, as you don't want that kind of behavior in your family especially since you are expecting a baby soon. Check out the pages I posted below for some great info. Good Luck! :)

i'd take the poodle.............poodles are one of the smartest dogs around. they are obedient and aren't as high maintenance or embarassing as you seem to think.
the hair do is a minor issue.........a trip to the groomer will take care of that!
the do on the photo you chose to show us is a 'show' hairdo, and is not something that the average person would do to their dog.
poodles do not shed! hence less cleaning! especially important for anyone with allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems.
with a regular hair cut a poodle looks pretty much like any other dog. the photo you show has the dogs face shaved clean, you can get their facial hair trimmed longer than that! but you will find that having their face clean shaven makes them easier to groom.
as for men walking poodles and you think they look a bit off, along with your comments about high maintenance and embarassing, its obvious you are hoping we will tell you to get the dog you think of as a 'real man's dog', even though the breed has a not so good history of violence. [especially when you are adopting a full grown dog that may have behaviorial or temper problems you are unaware of]. and i have to say i sure wouldn't want that dog around a baby or toddler. scary thought!
as for your wife saying that is the hair cut she wants on a poodle and nothing else? let her spend an hour or more every day to keep that hairdo looking decent and she will change her mind. it is a lot of time and attention. and forget about getting a groomer to do it on a regular basis........way too expensive! we tried keeping a fancy hairdo on our boy and finally realized it was just too much time wasted. our guy is now sporting a regular hair cut and we love him just as much and hubby walks him daily and isn't embarassed at all! so get over that idea!
you and your wife need to learn about compromise! and then pick the poodle! lol
good luck with it all
enjoy your dog
cheers

either way you go both dogs are temper-mental but pits are not as bad as people think.. they can be loving and caring... as long as you teach them that way.. they only attack when told or if beaten.. To me poodles are hateful more hateful then pits... I had a miniature poodle once and she was crabby about anything didn't like children and was jealous when a child would come around and take away her attention. My pit was different he would have died for my nephew or niece loved them just as much as i did... never though of hurting them... and he was a great watch dog. but she is pregnant so maybe wait until after the baby is born to get a dog so that the dog can grow up with the child then you will be able to tell what to do....

I vote for the poodle... minus the hair cut...

Perhaps as a strike to the wife, but.. to keep a poodle like that.. it takes HOURS a day to groom in order to keep them looking that nice.. and if you don't plan on doing the clipping yourself.. lots of money too!

With a baby due, a dog that will be high maintenance might not be the wisest of choices... but.. at least with a poodle, you won't have to worry about hair all over the house or the possibility that your baby could be allergic to dogs.

Regardless... a poodle with long hair, it requires daily brushing to prevent matting, so I vote poodle.. with short hair :P

Number 2 looks like a poodle to me and if it is then you should be careful. They can be know not have bad temprements. When choosing you should have something that has a history of good temprements. But when you have a baby you should be extra careful. If you go to visit the dogs maybe take a younger cousin or friends child with you to see how each dog reacts to the child. Hope this helps
