A friend of mine has a neice (age 18) with an acne problem. She has been using ProActive for 6 mos. now. BUT, her skin looks worse than it did when she started. She did clear up for a while but now she breaks out horribly and scars from the acne. She does use the product as instructed.
Has anyone else had this experience (or similiar) with the product?
I had been thinking of trying it but this concerns me to the point I just got a Retin A rx instead. Since I can no longer have kids, the side affect involving pregnancy is a non-issue for me.
I know there are tons of people who could sing the praises of ProActive, but, is there anyone who had a bad result as this girl did?

Nina, I appreciate the Accutane thoughts. I DID ask about it but the nurse & MD both told me that my problems were not bad enough for it. I have also seen Accutane results & was amazed by it. The deciding factor for me was that my health insurance does not cover outpatient lab work & the liver function testing you are supposed to do with Accutane treatment would have hit my wallet hard! But, I am glad you reminded me of that option.

Serena, I personally wanted to use BC pills for myself but since I had a hysterectomy, I cannot use them anymore-lol!

My poor sister has been battling acne for years and she tried pro-active and it made it worse. Not only did it make it worse she ended up having to go to the doctor because it irritated her face so bad she had to get prescriptions for a soothing cream and then got a prescription for retin a. It is kind of helping.Good Luck! Take Care!

I've done both Pro-active and Retin A for my acne. Pro-active never really worked, but the mask they sent is a great way to get rid of acne when it shows up. I just put a dot of it on a pimple when it first shows up and it usually does the trick. Retin A never really worked any better than Pro-active for me (and the insurance had a difficult time with it because they wanted to make sure my mother wasn't using it for wrinkle cream.)

Actually, the only thing that got rid of my acne was my birth control pills (which I started taking because of a period issue.) After I started the pills my acne cleared up, I still have scars on my face from my previous acne, but other than that my skin is clear as can be. I'm 27 now and am pregnant, and the acne really never came back (I was worried with the pregnancy that it would show up again...but not so.) Hope that helps. I do still use the proactive refining mask to zap those pimples, but I buy it on e-bay for like 5 bucks instead of getting the whole pro-active set.

Hi. I've used Pro-Active. I didn't have this problem but had a huge problem w/ the fact that it dried my skin out terribly. Enough to never use it again.
I've also used Retin-A and actually had better luck w/ the Pro-Active. If pregnancy is not a factor, the best thing (for me, anyway) is Accutane. That stuff was AMAZING!!!

i had some out breaks last year, and i used proactive and got ZERO results. meaning nothing changed. it might have made it worse, at least i left worse that it didn't help. MURAD is sold in Sephora stores [where i worked at the time] and they have an amazing acne kit that helped. make sure she washes as often as possible, exfoliate, and treat! if it gets worse she should see a professional.
