that's a really god point, except you can't buy a house if you don't know it's for sale. that's where moses came in. i believe that the story (this might be talmudic, not biblical) goes that they already had a belief in a monotheistic god when they were offered the torah. the torah was more of an offical contract, in this sense, lining out the rules and laws for being jewish.
chosen people is often misunderstood - the term refers to the way we as jews see our relationship to god - chosen by him to take on certain responsibilities for making the world more fair. our oral tradition, or mythology teaches us that's what was signed onto when we accepted the torah. it is never meant to be taken as a reference to the "un-chosen-ness" of anyone else.

What was meant by Moses teaching them about their God was that they needed to get to know him as a person. They also had not received the Mosaic law which directed how they should worship God.
If they'd truly known their God they would never have wound up in Egyptian bondage to begin with. It was because of their disobedience that they lost God's protection.

They weren't the chosen people until they decided to CHOOSE the Torah, where they learned all about G-d. They had been slaves in Egypt for decades and had been raised knowing about Egyptian gods. It is the same reason children go to religious schools today.

Just shows that they have gone astray, God sent them a messenger before they compeletely changed their faith, but when they did, God sent Christianity, then islam.
