Don't you find it ironic that an alleged religion of "peace & love" was spread by the sword? The mere fact that the Holy Roman Church had an army and a hit squad makes one wonder just how peaceful and loving the early Christian church was.

It wasn't, of course. It was all about power and control. And during the Inquisition, that power and control was violently vetted primarily against women.

Any wonder that as a woman, I'm not a Christian?

From a scholarly article on The Malleus Maleficarum...

"A central element in the Malleus Maleficorum is its quite astonishing targeting of women, and specifically midwives "who surpass all others in wickedness" (Malleus Maleficorum Part 1 Question VI) The text expresses the idea that more witches are women and explains it in terms very much focussed on female sexuality. They refer to such authoritative sources as the Bible, Cicero, Seneca and others to justify the argument that women are much more prone to vice than are men - feebler in intellect, more prone to wickedness and conclude that "All witchcraft comes from carnal lust which is in women insatiable." The document prefigures the enormous numbers of women who would be tortured, burned or hanged in following century. However, it cannot be claimed that the Malleus brought about the fear and hatred of women that was such a clear feature of the persecution. Rather it reflected a view of women that was already prevalent in the church and the educated world, as attested by the number of authorities that the authors refer to."

Eusebius of Caesarea (c. 275 – 339) (often called Eusebius Pamphili, which has nothing to do with those comic-book pamphlets you find in restrooms along I-42) was known as "The Father of Church History" because he wrote the definitive work on the early days of the church. He also wrote critiques of a large number of heresies that had arisen during that time, which was fortunate because after the councils of the Fourth Century, a lot of the old, inaccurate histories and heretical scriptures disappeared due to careless filing errors during the reorganization. If it hadn't been for him, we might not know WHAT went on back then.
