Further to the factual answers already given, the event was described in a most unusual and gorgeous way in a poem by G K Chesterton, which I've used to address the children in church on Palm Sunday (which is what I think you mean - not passion Sunday):
THE DONKEY
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood,
Then surely I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil's walking parody
On all four-footed things.
The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb.
I keep my secret still.
Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far, fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears
And palms before my feet.

Jesus entered Jerusalem on the Sunday before the Passover. Otherwise known as the triumphal entry. On Monday he cleansed the temple. On Tuesday he taught in the temple and then was anointed in Bethany. On Wednesday his enemies hatched the plot against him. The Last Supper took place on Thursday - that night he was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane and taken away to be tortured and then tried. On Friday he was crucified at Golgotha and buried before sundown on that same day.
Specifically, when he entered Jerusalem, he fulfilled the prophesy in Zechariah 9: 9 by riding on a donkey, an animal symbolic of humility, peace and Davidic royalty. He created quite a stir. The crowds spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David!" and "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" and "Hosanna in the highest!" Hosanna means "Save!" as in an exclamation of praise.
Although I am not well acquainted with the church traditions, this is what happened to Jesus when he entered Jerusalem to complete his mission.

The fulfillment of prophecy. Little children ran up to him saying,
"Hosanna to the Son of David,"
14The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David,"
they were indignant.
Matthew 21:16 "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him.
"Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read,
" 'From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise'?"
Jesus was quoting Psalm 8:2 from the Septuagint.

The people of Israel acclaimed him as King, many covered the ground the donkey Jesus was riding trod on with their robes and olive palms and proclaimed the arrival of the Messiah
