Its not...Actually it doesn't work. But Christians seem to think it does. www.godisimaginary.com

How do we know that "answered prayers" are illusions? We simply perform scientific experiments. We ask a group of believers to pray for something and then we watch what happens. What we find, whenever we test the efficacy of prayer scientifically, is that prayer has zero effect:
It does not matter who prays.
It does not matter if we pray to God, Allah, Vishnu, Zeus, Ra or any other human god.
It does not matter what we pray about.
If we perform scientific, double-blind tests on prayer, and if the prayers involve something concrete and measurable (for example, healing people with cancer), we know that there is zero effect from prayer. Every single "answered prayer" is nothing more than a coincidence. Both scientific experiments and your everyday observations of the world show this to be the case every single time.

Prayer is a means by which we draw nearer to God.
God hears all the prayers of the righteous. But consider the following:
A Christian hunter is hunting bears in the woods. While walking up a hill he grabs a branch for leverage and it breaks sending the hunter tumbling down the hill, gun flying off elsewhere. When the hunter dusts himself off he sees a huge bear charging him. The hunter begins running, but trips and falls, landing on his knees. Seizing the opportunity, and being a good Christian, the hunter begins to pray, "Lord, make this bear a Christian."
The woods are quiet, the hunter turns and, Hallelujah! He sees the bear on his knees, paws together, praying! Listening, he hears the bear praying, "Father, bless this food to my body."
The key point here is that God answers prayers of the righteous, but the answer you get may not be the answer you wanted, BUT it will always be the right answer.
Use the following pattern in all your prayers and you will see them answered: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. See the llinks below for more information. (acronym: ACTS)

I beg to differ with the others. I have seen more answers to prayer than I can talk about.
For Christians prayer is important for several reasons: It cultivates our relationship with God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
It shows our trust and dependence upon God;
We go to God for guidance, wisdom and comfort.
When we pray for the needs of others and the needs of the world it helps to nurture a caring and loving spirit.
Just a few reasons why prayer is important to Christians.

Prayer is just a word for communicating with God. He wants a relationship with you. Just like any other relationship, you have to have conversation....and that is what prayer is.
God loves you and wants to spend time with you...that is why it is so very important.

Because it´s the only way to communicate with God we have. He wants us to pray so that he can help us. ¨When we pray we worship him, so we humbly bow our heads before his Almighty hand, we thank him for the numerous benefits we get every day from him and we ask him things - if we do this with faith and the things we ask for are good he´ll always hear our prayer.

It is an integral part of your relationship with God, in that you are able to receive answers to questions, blessings that you sometimes must ask for, among other things.
