No, no, no, fellow Muslims... Yeshua bin Yosef/'Isa ibn Maryam ('alayhi salaam) was both. Messiah means 'anointed one' and he was the 1st Messiah and last chance sent upon the Jews.
Muhammad (salallahu 'alayhi wa salaam) was the 2nd Messiah sent upon all of mankind.
Read the Qur'an. In one of the chapters it specifically says Messiah, son of Maryam...
Knowledge is power; power is freedom; and freedom is peace...
As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu...
(Peace be upon you and God's Mercy and His Blessing...)

Islam holds that Jesus was the Messiah, and a Prophet. The Old Testament teaches that Messiah is a Prophet, not divine.
In this, the Muslims hold truer to the Old Testament than the Christians.

Jesus (as) is the messiah of the Jews, who had fallen into legalism and forgotten the love and mercy of Allah. He is also a prophet. Jesus (as) will return in the last days, along with Imam Mahdi, to lead the people toward righteousness before the final judgment.

Muslims believe that Jesus is just a prophet. We believe that he never died, but was sent straight to Heaven. He will one day come down to defeat the Anti-christ near the end of the world, but he is not our Messiah.
I don't know much about this Imam Mahdi you speak of, but he is definitely not the Muslims' Messiah. I think he is just supposed to be a really influential Islamic leader around the time Jesus comes back to earth. Imam Mahdi may be more important in the shi'a tradition.

Is it the wrong translation?

Both.
He was a prophet 2000 years ago.
He is still alive.
He will return and with the help of Imam Mahdi, save the Muslims.
If by Messiah you mean just someone who saves a group of people. No divinity involved.

The blogbaba was surprised to find out Muslim acknowledge the virgin birth of Christ, I though only Christians did. Muslims side with the Jews on the issue of Christ's divinity, and consider him only a prophet, not God incarnate.
