Not all speak in tongues.
1 Cor 12:30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
Anyone that says you have to is wrong.
I think that the gift exists today.
Not everyone gets it.
As far as using it in public, I don't think so.
1 Cor 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
Why did he say this?
You must have an interpreter or shut up.
and,
1 Cor 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers, but to those who believe.
If you are in church--don't you think the people there are believers?
It is a sign for non believers.
Why would you need this in a congregation of believers?
Furthermore,
It is for you---
1 Cor 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
It is for you to speak to God. IT IS CONTAINED IN THE ABOVE VERSE.

There are several gifts of the Holy Spirit, but, the gift of speaking in tongues is just one of them and it is a fallacy that everyone has to have this gift as PROOF that they have the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are varied and they are given to prop up a congregation so some have the gift of healing while others have the gift of prophesying, some may have the gift of understanding, yes the gift of tongues is a gift too but you don't all have to have this. If a Church says this, I would suspect then that some if not all the people that were speaking "in tongues" were faking it so as not to be singled out as not "having the Spirit". I might think about going to another Church.

I have found no where in the bible that all born again believers speak in tongues. not all people get all gifts, so if the church you are attending claims that you must have that gift or you are not born again, then you need to find a new church that is standing more on the Word.
1 corinth 12 :27-31
All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church:
first are apostles,
second are prophets,
third are teachers,
then those who do miracles,
those who have the gift of healing,
those who can help others,
those who have the gift of leadership,
those who speak in unknown languages.
Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.

There is no text in the bible that says that all should speak in
in tongues. In fact it says that not all people receive this gift!
Read 1 Corinthians 12: 7-11
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
God gives us each our own gifts, but not every person will receive all of them, There have been many sincere christians who have never had been able to speak in tongues.

Tongues is the least of all the gifts take admonition of Paul to seek the best gifts.. As for me any gift God wants to give me I praise Him for. These Scriptures make it very clear that all are NOT gifted with the same gifts.. Jim
Romans 12:5-8
For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
1 Corinthians 12: 1,4,9,28,30-31
1. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
4. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
9. To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
28. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
30. Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31. But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Connie, I am not a Christian but I can answer as though I was: imagine I am using my Christian alter-ego here:
"God has a plan for you. Maybe that plan is to speak in tongues, maybe not. The important thing is that God has chosen which gifts to give you."
I am not part of the peanut brigade - and I don't think that was a helpful answer.

some of your statements seems to indicate that you have been taught not to believe.
and it might be that doubt that has hindered your receiving.
yes, speaking in tongues is for today, just like all the rest of the gifts and miracles of God.
in mark 16:17 Jesus said that those that believe would speak with new tongues.
and there's believers/christians today.
in 1 corinthians 12 Paul is speaking about public ministry giftings. saying, "not all are teachers, not all have gifts of healings, not all speak in tongues, not all interpret."
and its true. out of a congregation of many or all that speak in tongues, there may not be but one or two that have a ministry gift of tongues, and another of interpretation.
so it was with the believers in 1 corinthians 14 Paul has to teach all those people speaking in tongues in a public arena. the majority of those speaking in tongues that required teaching on proper orderliness is proof itself that all can speak in (private prayer) tongues.
Paul said its a form of personal spiritual edification, vs4, a way to communicate unto God in a way beyond our own learned language, vs2, a way for spoken mysteries to be revealed, vs2.. its a way to worship,vs15, to bless, vs16, and give thanks, vs17
speaking in tongues is a sign that you have received. acts 10... when the gentile family spoke in tongues Peter knew that they'd received the same as on the day of pentecost. he didnt take it as a sign that they were born again.
speaking in tongues without interpretation is not a sign of fake tongues. its just a sign of disorder.
but Paul allowed that there is a place for congregational worship in tongues (ephesians 5:18-19), that all may exercise that dimension in spirit that do not have one of the public ministry gifts.
there are other scriptures that speak of other elements of speaking in tongues, like romans 8:26-28
prayer in the spirit, to pray in tongues when you dont know what to pray (in your own mental ability), to intercede for others when you dont know anything about the situation.
jude 20-21
praying in the spirit/speaking in tongues to be built up in your faith and trust in God., and to keep yourself in the love of God., (and out of saying or doing something that is not in line with the love of God).
acts 19:2 is written in the present form. "have you received., since you believed?"
the question is stilll being asked today.

If you have asked God to give you the gift, just stand on your faith and trust Him to give it to you. He will in His timing. I am Pentecostal and I asked God for this gift just as you did and He answered my prayer, but it was not instant. So just continue to believe and He will answer your prayer. I will add you to my prayer list and pray with you on this as well. Gos bless you
