I have been sick for a week and have been extremely tired and my glands are swollen but I havent had a really bad sore throat like the normal symptoms say. I went to the doctor and he said it was just the flu. When should I go back and get a blood test for mono?

There are 2 types of mono. CMV mono doesnt always have the same typical sore throat as EBV mono.
If you dont see results in a few days, you should definitely go back to the doctor. With the flu and mono, they can give anti-virals to help you feel better.
Just relax, take ibuprofen, drink lots of fluids, and if you suspect mono, dont lift heavy stuff!
When i had mono, my left side and my abdomen were tender from my spleen and liver being swollen. If you have that as well, go on back and tell your doc.
Good luck and feel better soon! Both the flu and mono are horrible to deal with so i wish you a speedy recovery!

There is a simple blood test that will tell you without a doubt if your son has mono or not. Mono has been nicknamed the "mimicking" disease because it can present itself in so many different ways and seem like so many different diseases in different people. When I had mono, I had swollen lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen, not a sore throat. Ask your doctor about getting him tested for mono. There are some doctors out there who don't believe mono exists despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I unfortunately had a doctor like this and had what is now believed to be an unnecessary surgery. If your doctor doesn't believe mono exists or doesn't think he should be tested, I would get a second opinion. I hope this helps and your son feels better soon.

Yes you can. I did not present with a sore throat at all when I had mono. Also DO NOT listen to the person about taking antibiotics!!!! If you DO NOT have a bacterial infection antibiotics are USELESS!!! Taking antibiotics without a bacterial infection is one of the reasons there are resistant bacteria. Antibiotics are meant for bacterial infections, not sore throats, the flu, colds, or anything like that. If you aren't getting better in a few days I would go back to the doctor and see if he'll do a mono test for you. Good luck, feel better.

You do not need to have a sore throat to have mono. If you feel muscle pains in the inner side of your legs, and you want to sleep all the time then you should get tested for mono. Right now is flu season and a lot of people mistake the flu for mono. If your symptoms have not improved you should go see your dr.

Good luck and I hope you feel better.

I had mono and the flu at the same time. A symptom of mono is inner leg pains and I didn't get them. Maybe its the same for you, you don't have a sore throat. I have been sick for a week. Your lucky cause one of the really bad symptoms of mono is a sore throat and I could only say three words and then I had to stop talking even If I did talk. You should get tested for mono and flu. Cause It might just be the flu cause you get extremely tired with the flu too.

yes you can have mono with no sore throat. I have had it multiple times sometimes with a sore throat sometimes without. Get to the doctor so they can give you the proper antibiotics to take.

Tests and diagnosis By Mayo Clinic staff Physical exam Your doctor may suspect mononucleosis based on your signs and symptoms and a physical examination. He or she will be looking for signs like swollen lymph nodes, tonsils, liver or spleen, as well as evaluate you based on the symptoms you describe. Blood tests ■Antibody tests. If there's a need for additional confirmation, a monospot test may be done to check your blood for antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. This screening test gives results within a day. But it may not detect the infection during the first week of the illness. A different antibody blood test requires a longer result time, but can detect the disease even within the first week of symptoms. ■White blood cell count. Your doctor may use other blood tests to look for an elevated number of white blood cells (lymphocytes) or abnormal-looking lymphocytes. These blood tests won't confirm mononucleosis, but they may suggest it as a possibility. Wait to return to sports and some other activities Most signs and symptoms of mononucleosis ease within a few weeks, but it may be two to three months before you feel completely normal. The more rest you get, the sooner you should recover. Returning to your usual schedule too soon can increase the risk of a relapse. If you're an athlete, be cautious about returning to strenuous activities or contact sports, especially if your spleen is enlarged, because of the increased risk of rupturing the spleen. Children with mononucleosis and an enlarged spleen shouldn't engage in vigorous activities, roughhousing or contact sports for the same reason. Rupture of the spleen results in severe bleeding and is a medical emergency. Doctors suggest you avoid contact sports for at least one month after you've had mononucleosis, depending on how long it takes your spleen to return to normal size. Although you may not be able to return to vigorous activities right away, your doctor may recommend gradual exercise to help you rebuild your strength as you recover from mononucleosis.

Must be a reason why you would think you had mono.....it could be your tonsils but if this has been going on for over a week......then maybe it is something else......if you happen to have any amoxicillin or penicillin at home....take those first for a few days but if not......yes go see your doctor.
