It's because women are compared to the GREEK Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, who is associated with Venus in ROMAN mythology; and men are compared with the GREEK God of War, Ares, who is associated with Mars in ROMAN mythology.

They could have used any two planets to make the point. We are different and the book is trying to point out those differences. The use of Venus for women goes along with mythology since Venus was the goddess of love. Mars was the god of war so there you have the choice of the two names. Love in opposition to war. The point being that men and women think differently and come from different genetic positions. The man as the provider and protector and the woman as the nurturer and comforter. Thus, Venus represents the feminine perspective and Mars represents the masculine perspective.

Actually, it goes back to Roman (or maybe Greek) mythology. Venus -- female -- was the goddess of Love. Mars -- male -- was the god of War. The idea that the two genders are so different that they may as well be from different planets follows logically from that.
But then, as the saying goes, "Vive la difference..." and half the fun is figuring out what men or women are up to.
Actually, there are a lot of good books that discuss the differences between gender behaviors. Deborah Tannen discusses the different ways men and women communicate in "You Just Don't Understand" and other books.

In John Gray's book, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus", he referred to men and women in this way to say that like two totally different planets, men and women think and are "wired" totally different from each other. It's actually a pretty good book. It doesn't attack men or women, but in a light-hearted and somewhat humorous way, actually helps us have a better understanding of why men and women act as we do. Hope this helps.

Yes, it is men are from mars, woman are from Venus, and it's very true. It means we think differently, perceive things differently, handle situations differently, and expect different things out of a relationship. Read the book, I learnt alot from it and it helped me understand men much better than I ever have before.

Because men and women are completely different, think and act totally from opposite thought processes.....it also goes with what another marriage counselor says that in making love men are like microwaves and women are like crockpots...just making the point how different they are.

because venus is romance and emotions and mars is cold and logical....
so they are trying to say, women are emotional and romantic and men are cold and logical...and supposedly they don't look at things in the same way.....
