I don't mean to put you down but your description leaves a lot to be desired. Sciatica covers a a very large area. Describe how and where the pain start. Does the pain move or radiate from the starting point. Does it get more or less intense. Does it move in any of the hips, legs, ankles, or feet?

Have you had any diagnosis made of the problem? How did you determine that it was sciatica as opposed to some other condition? Have you had XRay, MRI, or CT scan, Discogram, Myelogram? EMG ?
???? What were the results? How did you comw up with this diagnosis

Have you seen a doctor?? What was his diagnosis?? did he suggest any of the following? Epidural shots? Steroid injections? Denervations?

I guess that the proper step would be a credible doctor,

There are many causes of sciatica. Sciatica is just a symptom of some underlying pathology. The best way is to meet a physiotherapist who can come to a conclusion as of what is the cause behind it. If is just some compression and not a mechanical problem of something impinging on it u can strtch it out and use neural mobilization techniques to relieve pain. But it has to be done by an experienced physiotherapist and cannot be tackled by yourself at home. Symptomatically painkillers may give u some kind of relief till the time u r taking them.

I know how badly this hurts because I have sciatica along with chronic pain/fatigue and many other physical problems. Try doing ice 20 minutes then heat 20 minutes...this may give you some relief, also Aleve will help with the inflammation. If this continues you should see an orthapedic Dr/ Don't let it go too long because it will only get worse. They will probably send you to PT before they do anything else...that's what they did with me. Eventually I had surgery but it was too little too late. I wish you the best.

Use a chiropractor and massage therapist with the principles below.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

I've been having the same problem for years but it's been getting worse. Usually, it lasts for a week or two but this bout I'm dealing with has been lasting about a month. I'm making an appointment with the doctor. I'd like to get an MRI to get an exact diagnosis. You wont really know what your options are until you see a doctor. In the meantime, you could try taking an anti inflammatory and put a heat pack to your back. I've heard cold packs work also but heat is better.

One thing that helped my mom was a pressure point in her foot. By massaging hard on the upper back portion of the arch of the foot, this relieved some of the pain.

She was also prescribed a TINS unit. Its one of those things that sends electrical shocks to the area to interfere with the pain signals.

None of these worked completely, but they seemed to help some.

I am not a doctor, but my mom got relief by taking regular neurobeon(B complex) injections. It is worth a try.

I have heard of Ayurveda being very effective too.
