Jehovah's Witnesses practice the Scriptural practice of disfellowshipping for unrepentance of such serious sins as fornication, drug abuse, stealing, and apostasy. Baptized Witnesses who join the military or publicly engage in worship with another religion are considered to have disassociated themselves from Jehovah's Witnesses.
Contrary to the misinformation of anti-Witnesses, it is quite possible to become inactive in the JW religion without becoming disfellowshipped. As long as one's lifestyle does not bring reproach upon the congregation, and as long as one does not advocate one's disagreements with the religion, the congregation has no interest in "investigating", exposing, and disfellowshipping an inactive former Jehovah's Witness.
For those who are disfellowshipped or disassociated, a primarly goal is to shock the person into recognizing the serious of their wrong so that they rejoin the congregation in pure worship. Since the primary bonds that are broken involve friendship and spiritual fellowship, it is well understood that family bonds remain intact. Parents, siblings, and grown children of disfellowshipped and disassociated ones sometimes choose to limit what they may feel is discouraging or "bad association" but that is a personal decision and is not required by their religion.
Former Witnesses who are disfellowshipped or disassociated are typically treated in accord with the Scriptural pattern explained in these Scriptures:
(1 Corinthians 5:11-13) Quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. ...Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
(Titus 3:10) As for a man that promotes a sect, reject him after a first and a second admonition
(Romans 16:17) Now I exhort you, brothers, to keep your eye on those who cause divisions and occasions for stumbling contrary to the teaching that you have learned, and avoid them.
(2 Thessalonians 3:6) Now we are giving you orders, brothers, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw from every brother walking disorderly and not according to the tradition you received from us.
(2 Thessalonians 3:14) But if anyone is not obedient to our word through this letter, keep this one marked, stop associating with him, that he may become ashamed.
(2 John 10) If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him.
(Matthew 18:17) If he does not listen to them, speak to the congregation. If he does not listen even to the congregation, let him be to you just as a man of the nations
Becoming baptized as a Jehovah's Witnesses is not a trivial step. At a minimum, a student must demonstrate months of regular meeting attendance and public ministry, then must himself express the desire to be baptized. The candidate then spends hours answering hundreds of bible questions wherein he expresses both a clear understanding and personal conviction regarding Jehovah's Witness teachings in at least three separate interviews with three different elders. The candidate must vocally agree to be baptized in front of hundreds or thousands of eyewitnesses, and must be publicly immersed in water. This is not a momentary emotional decision by an unreasoning child. Dedication as a Witness required hard work and determination at the time.

Those who are considered "no longer a Jehovah's Witness" are those who unrepentantly continue to practice wrong. There are many Jehovah's Witnesses that have done things that God considers wrong, but because they were repented they were not disfellowshipped. Anyone, who has been disfellowshipped can always clean up their life and come back. I have a brother and a sister who are now working on getting reinstated.
It is just like if someone in the military does something that is against the rules, they get a dishonorable discharge. The other members of the military do not associate with them. Or if someone is a doctor or lawyer, who have done something unethical, they lose their license. In these cases, they may never be able to regain a good standing. But Jehovah is forgiving and allows those disfellowshipped to come back and be part of the congregation.
If we allow wrong doers to remain in good standing in the congregation, then we are no different than any other religion, such as the Catholics allowing child molesters to remain as priests, which allowed more children to be molested, and brought a bad name to the Catholic religion.
The congregation needs to remain clean. This is scriptural:
"In my letter I wrote you to quite mixing in company with fornicators, no (meaning) entirely with the fornicators of this world or the greedy person and extortiners or idolaters. Otherwise, you wouild actually have to get out of the world. But now I am writing you to quit mixing in company with anyone called a BROTHER that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. For what do I have to do with judging those outside? do you not judge those inside, while God judges those outside? "Remove the wicked man from among youselves." 1 Cor. 5: 9-13
I hope you will not allow this to keep you from studying the bible. As you studying and learn more about Jehovah, you realize he is a just and loving God. He doesn't want anyone to loss out in being part of his Kingdom.
...Michael Jackson is not a Jehovah's Witness. His mother is and I believe his older sister Reba.
To Shawn D.: Just because we do not believe that the Trinity Doctrine is taught in the bible, does not mean we do not believe the whole bible....you need to do some research on where the Trinity doctrine came from and read the whole bible and see what Jesus said about his father. Why did he pray to his father, why did he say his father is greater? When Jesus was baptized God said "This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved."
Only the Father knows the day and the hour, not the Son. Jesus said he was going away to his father. He is at the right hand of God. Yes, he said I and the father are one, but the bible also says that a husband and wife are one, this just meant that they are in agreement with each other, in harmony with each other, not the same person.
The New Catholic Ency. stated that trinity doctrine did not come into existance until the 4th century.
The New Ency. Britannica says" "Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: 'Hear, O Isreal: The Lord our God is one Lord' Deut 6:4 ...The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies...By the end of the 4th century...the doctrine of the Trinity took substantially the form it maintained ever since." Vol. X, p 126 (1976)
It is felt that the Trinity doctrine developed from Greek philosopher's Plato concept of the divine trinity, which can be found in all ancient pagan religions.
I personally would appreciate it if you would do more research before you comment on our beliefs.

we as Jehovah Witnesses did not make our own bible. also michael jackson is not a Jehovah Witness, he turned his back on Jehovah and Jesus Christ. he worships money. I never had a bible growing up or when I was first married, studying with the Jehovah Witnesses, I learn alot. I learned that God has a name and his name is Jehovah, not God which is a title. also the holidays are man made. I am looking forward to seeing my husband again in the new system, because he will be brought back to life and live forever with us. I also know that he is just sleeping in death, he is not being harmed anyway. that hell is just the common grave. now I have a worldwide brother and sisterhood in 236 lands and no matter where I go, all I have to look for a kingdom hall and they will take me in and treat me like family. www.watchtower.org. as for the disfellowshipping, Jehovah keeps his house clean. Jehovah does not except man sleeping with man, or woman sleeping with woman. or someone does does not want to worship him. also I was raised a jewish and so was my late husband

I feel that we are imperfect humans struggling to follow the Bible. I love the fact that we cannot even begin to consider ourselves Witnesses till we know the Bible. I really dislike the fact that people make up things about us, Michael Jackson is SOOOOO not a Witness. I think some of the answers you got, like the one from Shawn D, prove that people do not bother to know about us before deciding to be authorities on us. PLEASE if you want to know something about us, or understand why we feel/act a certain way, ask one of us.
As for disfellowshipping, it is a very painful, indepth process. It something better explained in person, but esentially it is like a time out. When someone decides they will not live according to the Bible(IE not just making a mistake but unrepentantly continuing to go against the Bible), they cannot be considered a Witness. IT works on many levels. It keeps the congregation clean, (Keep in mind their are still people who assume Michael Jackson is a Witness despite the fact that he does not live as one) thus keeping unChristian influences out of the Congregation and also it gives the person time to think about their life and decide what they want to do. They are still free to attend meetings, they just are not considered active Witnesses and are not socialised with.

Disfellowshipped JW
1982 Corning, CA Congregation
For cause, but not the ones some ex-JWs who want to put themselves on a pedestal, want you to believe, and know you will without question.
First, it shoudl be noted that a disfellowshipped person is not banded from attending meetings, nor are witnesses banded from talking to them, just not about Bible issues.
You could wait until next May when this program about Jehovah’s Witnesses is shown on PBS, or you can order a copy now. It was done by an independent film company.

Setting aside any Bible issues:
They believe in obeying the law, even the inconvenient ones, such as speed limits when late for work.
They believe in paying taxes, even though there are many ways they could avoid them, as most religions do.
They believe in keeping their word, such as to the IRS that they will not promote politics in the church, and they actually mean it.
They teach their youth that waiting until marriage is preferable to using protection, and for the most part, the youths actually believe it. As a result, they have the lowest rates of out-of-wedlock births and STDs. Yes, there is the occasional ones who would rather have their fun now than wait, but there are far more who choose to wait.
They treat their youth with respect, not just "do what you're told!"
Youths are taught side by side with the adults, the Bible as a whole, and not just Bible stories. The very young may not understand what they are being taught, but by the time you reach the age of understanding, they have a good basic knowledge of the scriptures.
The congregations never get so large that the individual gets lost in the crowd. Since everyone is taught the same, it is easy to start a new congregation, with a set of elders.
Everyone knows everyone, whether in their congregation, or in their circuit. When Katrina happened, every Jehovah’s Witnesses, along with neighbors, living in New Orleans could be found in Texas, with every witness accounted for. How many other religions could say for certain they knew that none of those left behind belong to one of their churches?
They believe their Kingdom Halls should compliment a neighborhood, and not overwhelm it, so they are small and don’t include a lot of expensive decorative features. Each KH can hold up to four congregations.
They encourage all their members to read the Bible and submit their thoughts. This was before the NWT and when they were using the KJV, or Authorized Version. It should be noted that this version of the KJV was not the first, but the fifth. It took four revisions over a 150 year period, before it was approved by the Church of England.
JW may have their own Bible, but it came about as a result of reading the KJV by thousands of people and noting the contradictions as a result of errors in translation. A good example is the scripture that says “The Word” is a Mighty God. A Mighty God gets its power and existence from an Almighty God. As for revisions, to my knowledge, it had not been revised since it came out in the 50s. My mother still has her first JW Bible, though it is worn like all the others she has used since them. Witnesses generally wear out a Bible every few years, whereas those in Christendom may have the same Bible for generations.
The greatest difference between JWs and the rest of Christendom can be answered with just one question.
WHAT DAY DO YOU OBSERVE THE MEMORIAL ON?
Everyone else will falter around and perhaps come up with a day in May, but all JWs will say at sunset on Niacin 14, which falls on the first full moon after the vernal equinox, the Memorial of the Last Supper. This is the only day, aside from wedding anniversaries, that Christ said to continue keeping, yet Jehovah's Witnesses are the only Christian organization that does.
Whatever you may say about whether it is right or wrong to observe the man-made holidays created since the first congregations, the fact remains that Christendom does not observe the one day Christ said to keep. What does that say for the leaders of Christendom, that they ignore that one important day of the year, and don't even know what day it falls on?
The question of holidays gets asked a lot, yet the facts of why are clearly evident. Even the Churches of Christendom recognize that the holidays and observances are not in keeping with Bible teachings, yet they fear that doing anything about it will jeopardize their positions and power. Check any religious encyclopedia about the holidays and their history.
So the question is not why don't witnesses celebrate the holidays, but why does Christendom celebrate something not taught in the Bible? Further, why don't they know what day Christ said to observe and why don't you observe it on that day?
Whatever you may think of any of the other beliefs of JWs, you have to ask yourself is the need to observe these holidays more important than observing the day Christ said to keep?

I was raised a catholic and one day a witness came to my door. She offered me the truth book they were placing that day. It took me straight to my bible. I was so amazed that finally at 22 I was able to read and understand the whole bible.
I was so tired of being told by priests that the bible was a sacred mystery. I knew it was God's word and the Witnesses gave me the greatest gift of all, the ability to understand what God's will is for me and how it affects my life.
I was baptized and have been happy ever since learning more and more of the God of the universe and his son Jesus Christ, who so lovingly and unselfishly gave his life for all of mankind.
I have become a footstep follower of Christ and long for the day when the whole earth is a paradise. Where peace and security will be the norm and the dead are resurrected .
What a wonderful provision God has given us.
And it started with a sweet person choosing to knock on my door and spend their precious time teaching me about the scriptures.

too a lot of it wasn't genuine. We many times stay far off from so noted as non secular videos. They portray the ideas of the worldwide on themes and actually do no longer care in the event that they're genuine or no longer. We spend a great variety of time with human beings we meet on the doorways dispelling the countless fake teachings and doctrines of religions as that's. Then the action picture makers come alongside with greater nonsense. We additionally stay far off from R rated video clips. now and back I turn off PG13 video clips. or perhaps PG by way of fact meaning "organic rubbish" to me.

I have answered this question recently. I honestly, truly believe that they do not believe the Bible and that their god is not really the God of the Bible for this reason. They appear to be extremely cultish and refuse to be Christians because this means accepting Jesus Christ as God the Son.
I feel that, on the lower levels, they are hurt and deceived individuals who are being taken advantage of, but on the higher levels I believe that they on purpose sell themselves as Bible believing Christians to hook the people in, but they themselves have no intention of ever believing God or coming to him. All of them, at all levels appear to be extremely religious, as far as I can tell, for the express purpose of avoiding God.
I like the fact that they are not going around doing a bunch of bad things. Being religious seems to be keeping them in line. I do not like the fact that they seem to hate, and I mean absolutely hate, the concept of the Lord Jesus Christ. They get to the point that they truly seem scary. I do not like the fact that they all know "the JW sell" backwards and forwards, but will not or cannot truly answer sincere questions.
What really bothers me, besides the fact that they call so many godly people in the bible liars (I am not making that up), is that they have made up their minds, that if the Bible is true, then they do not want to have a thing to do with it. This has more to do with the apparent evil that must be lurky inside of them somehow than with the fact that they just do not believe, because I think that they do believe, but simply reject it.
Their denial of the logic of "if a = b, and b = c, then a = c" really ticks me off sometimes, but that is just a really big annoyance.
By the way, I do not understand/know about "disfellowship", is that what they do when they leave Christianity and come to be a Jehovah Witness?

I have an aunt that is Jeovah withness and she is always saying that only they are going to save and that all other religions are the big Babilony (or something like that) since I was 3 (now I'm 18) I hear her saying: "this are the last days." And everytime I mention something about my church she rolls her eyes and say something negative about it. They want to convert anyone around them and they want everyone to believe that what they say is true. I don't believe that celebrating a birthday or any other holiday is a sin... that's just stupid! However, I respect their believes as long as they respect mine too... sadly my aunt doesn't.
