I plan to get her spayed, I just didn't expect this to happen so soon, she's only 9 months, and she's my first dog. What should I expect during this time?

Female dogs can go into season (heat) as young as 6 months so this is not out of the ordinary. It can be a hassle to have to clean behind her but keep in mind that she will be in heat for at least three weeks. The first week she will not accept a male, the second week she will, the third week she will attempt to fight them off. Just keep her away from the males at all times. I found that buying cheap plastic bed covers, etc from the Dollar Stores worked great for preventing my dog from bleeding on furniture, etc. Usually it is not a lot of discharge but enough that you will spend time doing some clean up. Have never had a dog that would allow the diapers so didn't use them or waste my money on them. If you attempt to get her spayed before her season is over the veterinarians will charge you quite a bit extra and most of them actually prefer to wait until the dog is out of season all together. But the first chance you get, get her spayed unless you plan on breeding her.

Expect all male dogs within miles to KNOW that she's in heat. Keep a close eye on her and don't allow them around. You should have her spayed as soon as you can. There isn't much more you can do for her. She will keep herself clean but if you keep her in the house you will have messes to clean up here and there. Keep her away from males for a minimum 21 days. She is most fertile during this time.

I have male dogs only and for precisely this reason. It's more expensive to spay than to neuter and the males don't even know they've been neutured. It's that easy!

For the love of mud, girl, get a book. There are so many books on the subject, just pick one that appeals to you. You will learn a lot plus further training as your dog gets older.

You can also type your question in the green bar at the top of the page where it says, "Search for Questions". This is ask several times a day and you will find bunches and bunches of information by doing it.

Get informed, educate yourself, learn what you need to know. There is not enough room here to go into all the little trick of the trade. Each dog is different and each require different ways to learn what your want them to learn. You can not teach your dog something you don't know.

Questions are all well and good but a good book will answer more questions that go along with your issue.

Expect a lot of blood dropping around the house. You can get puppy pads from the pet store or use a diaper but make sure you change them frequently or they will hold in excessive heat that could over-heat your baby. Also, do not let her outside unattended because the odor she emits will attract stray or neighboring dogs that will even dig into your yard any way possible to mate. It should only last about a week so be patient.

Your dog will be in season for 21 days. She will be clingy and have some discharge. She will still be in season once the discharge has ended so you will still need to keep all males away for the full 3 weeks. You will need to keep her leashed during all outdoor time. Expect males to come and visit. Some dogs have dug through wooden doors to get to each other during "heat".Please make an appointment now to get her spayed in a few weeks.

learning the correct teminology is a good place to start; first she is not having a "period" she is in heat, secondly you should've gotten her some panties and pads to catch the blood with, and most importantly you need to keep her inside as much as possible or else she will end up pregnant. Her heat will last for about 3 weeks and if anything she was a little late going into heat because the average age for their first heat cycle is about 6 months of age. Please buy books about dogs especial females which are also called dams and b*tches or ask your vet about all of this stuff, if they are any good, they won't mind talking to you as long as it takes to answer all of your questions and put away any concerns you may have about your puppy.

1) go get her dog panties, and doggies santiary pads.
2) Wary of your hygenie, clean her private parts at least twice a day to keep her fresh, though she will clean herself.
3) expect to see some menses blood drip on floor,
4) get her away from male dogs for as long as next one month even after the menses is over unless you want her to be pregnant.
5) wear panties for her at all times just in case she comes into contact with any male dogs, she will tend to attracts lots of male dogs at this point of time.
6) be prepared she might experiencing loss of appette, apparantly they are very like we women.
7) heat comes for about 2 weeks to a month.
8) dogs get pregnant very easily than we can think of, just a drop of semen from males rub against the genital could make her pregnant, be careful.

Maybe you should consider getting her spayed after the heat period. Vet will advise you what to do by then.

First thing...if you don't want her pregnant, make sure that you go outside with her, preferably on a leash... If you have unleashed males in your neighborhood expect them to be hanging around...
Female dogs and cats will go into heat (get their periods) the first time around 6 mos, so yours is actually a bit late... Call your vet and set up and appt to get her spayed...

First dogs cant have periods. Its called going into heat. Which the "stuff" that comes out of her back end will have blood in it. Just if she likes to jump around and shake alot expect it to fly all over u and your house so try to keep her in an enclosed area for the duration of the time.
My mom use to dog sit fo rour neighbors who had a female black lab. And she loved to wag her tail. Whenever she went into heat and my mom would walk into the house she would start wagging her tail and it would fly all over the walls. It was so gross.
And make sure u go outside with her EVERYTIME she goes out. Male dogs can even smell her inside there house. Plus they can smell her from miles away, literally. And they'll come looking for her. So just make sure your there with her outside or she might also roam looking for a male which can piss your neighbors off.

I know u said u were getting her spayed but do it as soooooon as possible. Not only is it uncomfortable for u and your dog but it drives other male dogs and their owners crazy (but no not for the same reason!)
I have a female rotti up the road and my choc. lab Woodie, goes crazy when ever shes in heat. He'll hump anyhting he can get his body over, including his son (also son of the rotti up the road, unexpected pups occured from one of their little "visits") and he hurts Charlie when he does it becasue hes only 9 months old. It also drives Charlie crazy but of course not as much as Woodie,a nd theyll run circles around in the house and fight and its just so horrible! And it makes us so mad when the owners dont have the common desency to tie their dog who's in heat up so that she doesn't roam into our yard and drive our dogs crazy. She'll sit in our front yard and wait for them.!!!!!!!

Hope This Helps!

Your puppy is in heat, which means her body is making preperations for her to mate. You can buy doggie diapers which will help protect your furniture and carpet and keep the secretions from running down her legs and matting in her fur. Keep her away from any male dogs if you don't want her to get pregnant. Other than that, you don't have to do anything special. This will last about 7-10 days.
