A man lives on the 79th floor of a block of flats. Every weekday morning he gets in the lift; goes down to the ground floor, and travels to work.
When he comes home in the evening he climbs the stairs up to the 79th floor.
Why?

i have a question. is this the most commonly asked question on y/a cos it appears in different catagories a few times a week. i'm not faulting you for asking but i think most people know the answer. but surely the higher the floor number the lower on the wall it is considering the top left hand number is the first floor. (think telephone keypad going up to 79) surely. dunno if it differs per country tho so forgive me if i'm wrong. god i put some effort into this answer. oh and btw its a midget/dwarf/small dude...etc....can i have 10 points for my lateral thinking answer or is it too long winded???

He is short? The ground floor button would be at the bottom of the column of buttons in the lift & therefore easy to reach, but the button for the 79th floor would be too high up for him to reach. as A short person myself, I can relate to this!!

he is too small to reach the 79th floor button and can only reach as high as the button for the entrance floor

Because everyday he walks into the building with a lady (lets call her Bertha) who also lives on the same floor. Well Bertha is in love with him and she thinks that if she touches him and "flirts" with him then he'll go to her place after work. Well he thinks that she needs to leave him alone and stop wearing so much perfume and stop touching him becasue its just so damn scary for him. So if he takes the elevator with her she'll probably attack him!!!!!
So he uses the stairs.

He is vertically challenged (a short **** to you and me) and can only reach the button for the groung floor in the lift

he's very short and can't reach the button - can't even reach 1st floor botton by the sound of it.
Can't jump either.

Not only is he a dwarf,he is silly.Why not go up as far as he can reach,and walk the rest.
