Rappers should tone it down, record companies should show some reposnsibility and not sell it and the public should not support it by not buying this stuff. I believe in free speech, but this stuff is so prevalent it's impossible for parents to prevent their kids from being exposed to it. We all have responsibility to stop it.

Unfortunately, no. This is America. Free speech is a tough sell sometimes. More responsibility lies with consumers. If it didn't sell, they'd stop doing it.

The most important part is making sure that kids understand why it's not OK for them to do it. And if they can't be responsible while listening, then it's a privilege that they should lose. Turn it back on them. Find an example of something they think is disrespectful to them... ask them how they'd feel about someone walking down the street singing it to them.

Kids are more influenced by their parents than they want to let you believe. There's a good chance a kid does something just to test the parent. Typical behavior.

My first responsibility is to raise my child in an acceptalbe manner. Them thinking I'm cool comes in last. I watched what my kids did. If it was bad, off it went. I listened to their music, bad stuff had to go. It is the parents. My 2 sons introduced me to their friends as their cool mom. I made limits for them but I also spent time with them and what they were interested in. I had 5 kids, 2 of my own and 3 full time step kids. The youngest is almost 19 and will graduate high school this year. Don't just set limits and enforce them, be there to listen even to the stupid stuff. When they really need an adult, you will be on the list. Also, get involved, listen to their music at a tolerable level. Know what your kids are doing and encourage them and make sure they know you love them no matter what.

Turn. The. TV. Off. No one is forcing you to allow your child to watch MTV. I was strictly forbidden from MTV and Nickelodeon as a child, and now that I live on my own, I SEE WHY. Those channels are absolute garbage. Despite popular belief, kids will respect your wishes when they understand why. Needless to say I raised a few eyebrows when I was a kid over at friends houses mentioning that my parents didn't want me to watch nickelodeon and MTV, but the parents always respected that and changed the channel.

It's your responsibility to raise your child. It's your responsibility to lay down the law. If you don't want them to watch/listen to garbage, then DONT ALLOW IT.

it is not the rappers responsibility to raise the child and put out "pure" music just because a child might imitate them. it is the parents responsibility to monitor what their child is doing and listening to.

No, I think it's a parent's responsibility to help their children, whether it be by keeping them from seeing those things, or by helping them learn why most people don't use those words or dress like that or act like that.

It's freedom of speech, and no one has to like it, they just have to tolerate it.
