The four types of teeth are the incisors, cuspids, bicuspids, and molars. Each type of tooth has its own job. The incisors, located in the center and front of the mouth, are used to cut (incise) food. There are eight incisors, four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw. Each incisor has one root. The cuspids, located at the corners of the mouth, are used to tear food. There are four cuspids, two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw. The cuspid has a single heavy root and a pointed crown. The bicuspids (premolars), located directly behind the cuspids crush and tear the food. There are eight bicuspids, four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw. These teeth may have one or two roots. This particular type of tooth is found only in the permanent dentition. The molars are the last teeth in the back of the mouth and are used to grind food. There are twelve permanent molars, six in the upper jaw and six in the lower jaw. In the upper jaw these teeth usually have three roots; in the lower jaw they usually have two roots. There are eight molar teeth in the primary or baby dentition, four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw
