Yes, you need to take the jewelry out immediately, and go back to your piercer to have it re-pierced after the hole has healed (I would say about 2 months). Also, keep an eye on the area to check for signs of infection, and keep that area clean with isopropyl alcohol. Sometimes, when a piercing that is infected heals, it can actually heal AROUND the infection, trapping the infection inside. What you just did was kinda stupid, and there is no way to sterilize an earring without an autoclave or sterilization gas. alcohol only kills 97% of germs.
Go here to find a professional in your area if the piercing was done by a "gun" : http://www.safepiercing.org

You mean you pierced your cartilage? You have to leave it in there. Did you know that kind of piercing takes two years to completely heal? Keep your ear and the earring clean. They should have given you some cleansing solution when you got the piercing. Use that.

"I had the top of my ear pierced and I took the earring out just an hour after I pierced it, the guy didn't tell me I shouldn't do that."
wow. that is common sense! the piercer shouldnt have HAD to tell you not to take it out. most people have enough sense to know that.

You need to make sure that you keep it in for a while now. Some people can never leave their cartilage percing open for more than about an hour. Wait a few months before you change it or take it out again. It is going to hurt....keep it clean, try not to sleep on that side of you head, and try to not pull it with your hair, etc.
Goodl luck!

No, you just re-pierced it. Careful in that spot though; my piercing there was on a nerve; I can't wear an earring in that hole for any longer than an hour and it gets really red and sore. Nice, huh?

I certainly have a foul habit of taking something out of the oven with an oven mitt, after which if it occurs to have one, i'm going to take the lid off with my bare hand. I do it all of the time... for some reason it does not sign in that the lid additionally gets warm contained in the oven. actual with cake.

As long as you sterilized it and clean it regularly i don't think there should be a problem.
