You would certainly be able to pick up some of the most common phrases, but I believe there are different French dialects....I am Italian descent and love foreign films; whenever I see an Italian film, (with subtitles, of course!!) I always try to translate for myself from the Italian I learned from my grandparents, who were from Naples...when I watch Fellini, I can't understand some of the words, as he's from a different part of Italy, so the dialects would be a bit of a problem...many times I find that what they are saying (if it's a movie in the dialect I know) is not exactly translated; they're not hiding anything, just saying it a little differently than what the titles say.......but yes,you could probably learn the basics, and possibly more, by doing that...sorry for the long-winded reply!!

from learning hebrew and chinese by living in the countries without studying - i would say after a year of watching movies you would have a few basic phrases, and be just starting to pick up words. If you watched for 3 years that might start to really get somewhere.

It really helps, but you need to talk as well. If you're gonna do it, try to mouth along with the characters!
