You can file a joint tax return and file an injured spouse form (Form 8857) to recoup the portion of the tax return that is attributed to you. The other portion will go towards appeasing the previous tax debt.

This link says no responsibility by new spouse. Upon death the estate or trust of the decedent is first liable. If none the spouse would be liable for joint return years only - not for years before marriage.

This is something that you really need to be asking a tax lawyer in your state. Do not ask the IRS. Go to a tax lawyer. They specialize in this and know tons of loop holes.
Good luck, take care and God bless.
