this is going to sound weird, but i would really like a mutt, a specific mix actually, but dont know where i would go about find a mix like this. currently, we have an australian shepherd (mixed with something), but she's actually pretty small, at 8 months, she's only 25lbs, and she's been this size for about 2 months so we dont think she's going to get much bigger. but she has the energy of an aussy, and we're thinking of getting her a friend in the future (not anytime too soon). but we were thinking that a mini aussy shep/ border collie would be a good size/energy level mix for her. but where would one go about finding a mutt like that? i know the shelters are the best place to get a dog from in general (thats where our pup is from) but its a shot in the dark to actually find a puppy around here (it took 3.5 years of going weekly to find a litter here!). i tired looking on line, but i can only go by breed, not mixes. any help?

pet stores like petco/petsmart? we have a pet land here, but they actually SELL puppies in their store which makes me think puppy mills, especially if you actually seem some of these dogs, those kind of places scare me.
we're in NoVa, if thats helpful.

oh i definitly wouldnt ASK someone to breed just so i could get it, but i know that people do make some pretty weird crosses now-a-days and just put a fancy name on them, i figured there has to be a breeder some where out there making something along these lines. and its not like we HAVE to have this mix, its just a good place to start being that we origionally wanted a border collie/lab (lollie) but that fell thru, and ended up with a really small aussie instead, so we're ready for that energy level and size.

Not weird, presise. Check out http://petfinder.com you can enter your zip and choose a breed. The ones listed will either be purebred or the main breed you choose mixed with something else. I used it to locate basset beagles. Loved the look of a basset but wanted a smaller version. Oh, and I ended up with a golden retriever x nova scotia duck tolling retriever. Go figure!

wow. interesting question. We have a pet shop in our mall, who sells mixed pups, (peekapoo, yorkie-poo, etc) and yes, it makes me think of puppy mills too, especially since they come with close to $1000 price tags!!!!!
Keep an eye out in the newspapers, or if your local per shop has a board for others to display unwanted/found animals, that's a great place to look. (I've recently gotten a puppy that way, actually.) Since some people can't sell mixed breeds, They generally try to give them away for free. Plus sometimes you can find an older pup or dog whose owners can't keep them because they're moving, or other various reasons.
The shelter is also a good spot to check.
BUT, once you come across another aussy mix, or something you really would like to try out, scoop him/her up while you can. because you may not see another mix like them again for a long time! If say, aussies are common in your area, it'll be easy to locate a mixed aussie, since some "accidently get pregnant" by some neighborhood dog.
The best mix I've owned so far was a chow/shep mix. He had the markings, nose, and personality of a german shep, and the thick fur, red coloring, and the shortness of a chow. Talk about a fun loving, protective, and easy going dog, at least until the wrong person walked into his yard! lol
I hope this helps you! Good luck in your search!

Since you made a comment that you are not planning to get the puppy any time soon your best bet is to keep going back to the SPCA and shelters and just take your time looking for a puppy rescue. The worse thing you can do is encourage someone to breed two good breeds just to sell you a puppy as the rest of the puppies may not end up in as good a home as yours. You can also ask the shelters to give you names and phone numbers of other shelters. You might be able to find shelter addresses on line. Please think about not encouraging others to bring more unwanted puppies into this world. I hope you find your perfect puppy. In My Opinion, I think is horrible to buy a puppy from petfinder or puppyfind or any other web site. You should want to pick out your puppy in person so you know what you are getting and get what you actually are paying for. There are a lot of puppy scams out there including in some of the web sites. Please do not buy a puppy from a pet store as they probably come from a puppy mill. Also, I found a lot of puppies on the web are from puppy mills.
Good Luck.

I have a terrier mix who weighs about 22 lbs. I'm not trying to discourage you in your quest for the "perfect" mutt, but a small terrier mix would probably be a good alternative. Mine is a border terrier mixed with another type of terrier, and he is quite smart and energetic doesn't even cover it! Based upon the scant information I got when I adopted him 4 years ago, he's about 7-8 years old now and still has energy to burn. And you definitely can teach an old dog new tricks! Good luck in your search.

Just a shot in the dark, why not ask your local shelter to put you on a waiting list for that type of dog? If they are a good shelter they will even look at other places to help you find what you want.

Pedigree pet food company is helping shelters with adoption right now. Click on their web site, enter your zip code and see what is available in your area:

We have an aussie mix ... aussie and couch potato I think ... that we love. If we get another dog, this would be a great mix.

You can try looking on Petfinder.com. Many shelters and rescue organizations across the country advertise their occupants there.
Understand that with mix-breed dogs, the mix is usually a best guess and there is no guarantee on size or temperament.

Yes... i would def say the shelters and the pounds are your best bet... call them and you can be put on a list... and you can tell them the kind you are looking for and if by chance one comes along similar to your needs, they will call you. You might also put an ad in the paper... it is a long shot... good luck...

lots of times you can go to flea market type things and find people that specialize in this. Try that 1st then ask around at local pet stores you are sure to find some leads there as well.

You could always look at the animal shelter or in the newspaper to see if there are such mutts.
