just moved into a very small town, only house available at the time. The neighbors need help...but I'm guessing I have to do the work. Here goes...they have 3 dogs, 2 in front yard, chained up and one in side yard next to my house, chained up. First problem is barking all the time. Second problem is they do not clean up after their animals. It is winter and we can still smell it. In the summer time we will have to deal with fleas and ticks. The fence line dividing our property is like chicken wire. Is there any plants that repeal fles and ticks and offers enough aroma to offset the smell. Can't move yet, so that's not an option. We live in missouri

first of all most counties have ordances about barking after a certian time. a
health department also has rules on cleaning up dog "waste"
one thing that does help with fleas is if you plant garlic. but the best thing you can do to keep fleas off your property is to spray dexiclore (spelling might not be correct) check at local lawn care center. it will not kill smell, but it will keep fleas and anyother pests out of your yard.

No plants that I know of but you don't want anything that will be bushy because ticks loves those kinds of plants. Try to put down lawn insecticide in the spring to keep the fleas and ticks away. You will have to repeat this in the summer and then the fall. Read the label on the bag to fully understand the instructions and the application method. This should help with the fleas and ticks.
As far as the barking, look into if your small town has any noise ordnance's concerning barking dogs. I live in a small town and we do.
Good luck!

Oo yes good ol missouri where flea season starts as early as february.. i live in MO too =)... The thing that sucks is that you cant have any bushes in your yard because that a good breeding ground for fleas and ticks... do you have any animals? if so I would use Advantage on them to insure that they dont bring fleas and ticks in your house, Advantage is AWESOME... dont try using the off brand stuff at walmart cuz it SUCKS! With the dogs barking.. do they bark at night also?? Cuz i think there is an Noise ordinance with that so you can call the police and tell them that its disturbing, i know they'll come out and do something about it =) I had to do that a few times with my stupid neighbors.. i was nice about it the first few times where i would go over and politely tell them to shut your dogs up =) If you want... try to plant some roses or lilaacs or something near your house to give you a nice aroma... but keep in mind that fleas and ticks may use that hide in or breed... But do take my advice on Advantage if you have pets.. its kick @$$!!

Excellent, the state I'm thinking of moving to. Well I don't know of any plants other than maybe mint but I doubt that would give you much of a reprieve. I realize law enforcement down there is pretty useless when it comes to caring about animals but why not try calling them anyway? If the dogs don't have shelter they will probably be taken away. Maybe you could offer them a home? That way they don't die in the shelter like so many others.

Call Animal Control. They will issue a citation for improper care of those poor animals. Also, if it isn't remedied, they will find new homes for them. I'd make your horrible neighbors either fix it, or not own animals!! You shouldn't have to put up with that.
