Very small pieces of any suspect material will be taken and viewed under a microscope. Asbestos fibres can be identified by specialists in this way. Many different materials had asbestos within them in the past from pipes, insulation, flooring, plaster, boilers, ceilings etc. Asbestos if completely safe as long as it is not disturbed. Following the survey they will issue a report giving you their findings. They should also then give you a recommended course of action. Removal costs vary dependant on the type of asbestos and it's location within the building, but in theory as long as you leave it alone it is not essential to remove it.
