Cash for taxis, the TKTS booth for discounted theatre tickets, some restaurants, but, otherwise, use your credit card for large purchases. Also bring an ATM card, so you have access to cash and don't have to carry large amounts with you.

although a large number of taxi's now take credit cards (not up to the drive, up to the car), they get annoyed with you and tell you it doesn't work (but it is fine for car services). I would use credit cards for everything over $10 or $20 and cash for the little things (like soda's and quick snacks).

The only think I spend cash on right now is a taxi ride or deli purchase (and if that is over $20, I use a CC) and my lunch at work (since the jerks do not let you use CC)

You may want to pay the taxi's by cash, but I would use credit cards for as many purchases as you can. It avoids you carrying large amounts of cash, and also gives you some protection if you purchase something and have trouble with the retailer. I lived in Manhattan for 18 years.

Credit Cards are great, Safer that Debit Cards,
Pre-Paid Credit cards are even better.

You need some cash for things like a Taxi, Pretzels and HotDogs on the Street ect.

When you use a Card, it gives you the bonus of a back up receipt.
If you are planing to see a play on your trip... the discount ticket booth, TKTS, "accepts only cash, travelers checks or TKTS Gift Certificates"

Agreed, credit card would be the way to go for restaurants (just make sure they accept your card), hotels, shopping etc... while cash is probably best for small purchases and transportation... you're going to want to have some cash on you but cc is safer...

Most hotels prefer credit cards, because the card can also verify your identity and can provide security in case of damage. For anything else, you might consider a debit card. You can use it to get cash at an ATM, and it works just like a credit card in stores or restaurants.

Definitely have cash for taxis. If you're planning to buy rush tickets for Broadway shows, many only accept cash. If you're buying from a street vendor, definitely cash. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same as when you're at home. I don't recommend carrying wads of cash around, though, keep it spread out on you. That's also helpful for haggling with street vendors ("I only have $20 on me," only works if you just pull out a 20).
