How long has the pain been bothering you?
Piankillers do subside the pain temporarily so pls ensure that your pain doesnt come back.
It could be disc herniation, the symptons do indicate that even if it is I would suspect it to be very minor considering your intermittent but Pls take it seriously and do follow up religiously, i had made a mistake of ignoring it for about 8 months since it was intermittent.
If need be, take up an MRI scan (most insurances do cover diagnostic tests) which will give a clear picture of the problem.

Take care n good luck !

sounds like a slipped disc to me. find yourself a good chiropractor, i am partial to those who studied at the Palmer institute. they will do xray and electro testing on each of your vertebrae. they should be able to correct the problem. pain meds just mask the problem and screw with your body. i had a slipped disc, hurt so bad i had to walk with a walking stick. after a few weeks it was corrected. whenever your spine is out of alignment, due to so many things, like falling in the bathtub, it will cause what they call a subluxation-- vertebrae out of line, and not only will it cause you pain, but all of the nerve endings connected to the troubled vertebrae will not be functioning correctly, causing other problems, since all or your nerve endings are connected to your spine.
best of luck to you..feel better

It sounds as if you may have bruised your sciatic nerve and it flares up when you over-do. Get the X-rays and don't put any stress on your lower back until you get the results.
