Contact both the CRA (Credit Reporting Agency) and the information provider. First, tell the CRA in writing what information you believe is inaccurate. Include copies of documents that support your position. Request deletion or correction of incorrect information. You can find sample letters on internet, one can be found here:

CRAs will reinvestigate the items in question--usually within 30 days. They also must forward all relevant data you provide about the dispute to the information provider. After the information provider receives notice of a dispute from the CRA, it must investigate, review all relevant information provided by the CRA, and report the results to the CRA.

What kind of bill? Is it on a credit card? If so, nothing will get filed with the credit bureau until the dispute is resolved as long as you have called the credit card company and disputed the charge.

If it is with some sort of collection agency and they do file something on your credit report, you dispute it with the credit bureau.

The credit bureau's can't remove something beforehand. It actually has to show up on your credit report and then you dispute it. The 3 credit bureau's aren't like the overseer of all your credit. What is on your credit report is what has been reported to them. It's up to you to get the original reporting party to remove it if it is incorrect.

See if you can put a freeze on it through one of the credit reporting agencies..then go after it with a vengance only if you are in the right! The company wanted my id numbers from here to eternity and the letter said circle the mistakes. I gave them the mistakes not my id..then I obtained my credit report and proceeded to call the local investigative reporter for radio station; funny how the big legal collection service never got back to me with an apology, explaination, or anything. Save and date all correspondence; they hate paper trails.

keep your documents filed and continue to dispute through letters I would also call a bureau to put a freeze on my credit whereas no one can post anything to the account until that dispute is resolved.
