I don't believe in wolf hunting and I am an avid hunter. Wolves have been decimated in certain parts of the country. Red wolves pose little threat to humans or to large livestock. I think we should only hunt what we are willing to eat.
That being said, in certain parts of the country gray wolves have been reintroduced and are doing very well. They are now overrunning into developed areas, attacking livestock, and they have no natural predators. Therefore hunting may be a humane way to keep the population in check. Getting shot by a high powered rifle is more humane that starving to death through overpopulation.

To preserve livestock and keep their numbers down to reasonable size packs. Wolves will attack and kill livestock just to kill them and a big pack of wolves can ruin a rancher overnight. They are very dangerous to humans, too. They are wild animals and make lousy pets since they are mostly nocturnal by nature. They sleep by day and hunt at night most of the time. And where wolves are, dogs and cats disappear as wolf food.

Despite the Public Relations hype to the contrary, wolves are dangerous predators that should not be reintroduced to America's parks and forests.
I know I will receive flames for this, because it doesn't fit in your Disney Fairytale world where nature is good and humans are bad. Sorry for telling the truth.
Wolves were hunted to extinction on most of this continent in the late 1800s and early 1900s by men who knew what wolves were capable of and who saw these animals as a threat to any person in their vicinity. We owe these men a debt of gratitude, not the scorn that they now receive.
Wolves and men cannot live in the same areas. If that means they go extinct, so be it. I think that the men who are out there right now shooting these dangerous animals are again providing a valuable service to society.

To answer your question, “FEAR”
Just listen to these people.
According to them the Big Bad Wolf Huffed and Puffed and Blew there House Down, and ate their kids.
It is this mentality that took the wolf to extinction.
Don’t judge all hunters by the poor actions of others.
As to the wolf being a lousy pet, I for one must state that I have had from 2 to 10 wolves at a time as pets for the last 18 years, and would trust them much farther then I would a domestic dog.
The domestic dog has kill more men women and children in just one year, then all the wolves have in the entire history of the United States.
If the wolf was such a blood thirsty killer as these people say, why did the wolf not wipe out the Native Americans who defended him self with primitive weapons and living in just a tepee.
If the wolf was as bad as they say about eating women and children, who greeted the pilgrims in 1776?
If the wolf is so hard on deer, elk and all other forms of big game, why was the big game here when we got here in 1776, to hear them talk it should have been nothing but wall to wall wolves.
There should have been no Indians, no big game, just trees and wolves trees and wolves.
Sounds to me like there is something wrong with their theory.
The wolf is an endangered species that is in the process of being de-listed.
As of 1-1-2007 in the U.S it is only legal to hunt wolves in Alaska.
That is legal hunting not depredation control by Federal/State officers or their appointed agents.
The wolf is just another predator, no mater what the uneducated will say or claim.
And I am a hunter and proud of it.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service director H. Dale Hall said the decision was taken because the wolves had been successfully re-populated. "We're extremely proud to be announcing the recovery of the wolf," he said.
Hall and other officials said removing federal protections for the 4,000 wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin and proposing to lift them for the 1,200 wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming is proof that the Endangered Species Act, the nation's landmark conservation law, works.
Under both plans, states would have the authority to manage their wolf populations as they see fit so long as they maintain enough wolves to ensure their survival.
Wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin will be de-listed in a matter of weeks, while it will take a year to complete the public hearings and other requirements to remove wolves from the list in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Well, back in frontier days people killed wolves to keep them from eating their livestock, the government paid them to do so. I don't know why they hunt them today or why they had to hunt the wolf to near extinction. Seems like a shame, they're beautiful creatures.

Nobody I know hunts wolves for fun, I do not hunt wolves, I kill wolves, because they are fierce predators, they destroy elk, deer, and live stock populations, they are a menace and should have never been reintroduced.
