There are many possible causes of dry eye. Medication or the enviorment. There is also a condition known as Dry eye sydrome. If you experience one or any combination of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from a medical condition known as Dry Eye:

Burning and stinging
Gritting feeling when there is nothing in your eye
Dryness
Itching
Sensitivity to bright lights
Mucous secretions in the eye
I would seek the advice of a Optometrist

It could be the cold weather and all the heating, OR you could be tired, try putting A drop of eyedrop lotion in each eye and lay with your eyes shut for 10 mins or even have a sleep for a hour or so.

Your drinking water and your dryness of eyes are not related. Dry eyes is due to a decreased production of tear by tear glands in the eyes. Could be due to several reasons and so needs a thorough evaluation. Artificial tears are a solution but doesn't suit every one. When possible keep your eyes closed. Minimise working on the PC, esp. with the CRT monitors. Minimise watching TV (unless you have LCD TV).

Plain water or if you prefer water with a little salt added can be safely used instead of artificial tears and eye drops. Closing your eyes and palming them is useful in relaxing. I am managing from nearly 20 years.

You could have developed a clog in your tear ducts, which is quite common. There are several types of eye drops out there, some are for adding the moisture to the eyes, others actually medicate, so be careful of the type you use.

You should really check with your doctor, as they can clean out the eye ducts, and check for other problems. I work outdoors with horses, and endure allot of sandy, windy days. Try wearing sunglasses to protect from the elements, even in winter. Anyway, before using allot of eye drops, you really should be checked out, so you know what type you really need to apply. Cleaning out the eye duct may be all the resolve you need. Good luck.

If you have dry eyes you need to see your opthomolgist for a proper diagnosis and to have them tell you which eye drops they prefer you use. Do not use any of the visine eye drops. Systane eye drops during the day is what was recommended for me and then GenTeal gel ointment at night. You may have a medical cause for it or it could just be the dry air where spend most of the day. See your opthomolgist for a diagnosis.

Could be your tear ducts are blocked in which case you might want to see a doctor or more possibly just cold weather. Try using eye bath or rose water.
