Well, he didn't happen by design as there was no designer at the time, so the only other alternative is by accident.
But then again, he was created by humans, so that would have certainly been on purpose.

I believe so, still, there´s of course the need to look for something better than us, then the concept of God happened. I believe it also reflects an absurd amount of lack o self-confidence and a desperate need for help. Humans tend to see themselves as fragile helpless beings instead of acting as warriors of their own cause, therefore, since crying for outer help is easyer than engaging in combat for inner help, they prefer to go to church and cry along together.

I think people invent gods because of a mis-firing of our natural ability for perceiving other intelligent agents in our world (human beings, predators etc.). So, it's an accidental by-product of a useful evolutionary trait.
