i know that i need a cigarette when i get a craving, its as simple as that. Its kind of an irritable, anxious, restless feeling that only a cigarette can stop. They only last about 5/6 mins but its horrible- especially when you're somewhere that you can't smoke, and the cravings get worse each time you don't smoke. I guess its hard to understand for anyone who isn't a smoker because everyone gets anxious and irritable from time to time but a cig doesn't solve it for people who don't smoke.

About social smoking- i started off smoking socially but when i was going out every night when i finished exams i became hooked. I can't remember how many i had smoked, quite a few though- not like i smoked 10 one day and i was suddenly addicted.

A smoker gets the urge to have a cigarette. The urge can be explained by an anxious feeling that can only be resolved with the puff of that cigarette. Also, when people smoke in certain situations, like when they drink, or after sex, or whatever..then getting into those particular situations triggers the urge to smoke.

It's very possible to get hooked in just a few sticks. I used to consider myself a "social smoker". I would bum a cig if I saw someone with menthols. Then after I would have one, I would go to the store that sells the cigs individually out of the cup so I could just have a couple. Then I'd think, why pay a dollar for 4 when I can get 20 for $3? So I'd get the pack with the intention of just smoking a few, but since I had them, I would get back into smoking regularly. No amount of smoking is good for you, and even a little can be harmful.

I guess it starts with an uneasy feeling--like being nervous. Breathing or hand movements might have the slightest jerk or twitch to them. Then an irritable feeling sets in. If you can get your mind on something pleasant you can stop this, but if you are under stress it multiplies. This feeling slowly grows as you feel the need for a cigarette. If you wait too long, the irritability will keep driving you nuts, until you can put it out of your mind for a while, or finally have a cigarette.

This may not sound like smack addicts who start puking thier guts out when they don't get a fix, but I know a lot of people who will brave snowy roads for an hour to get to the 7-11 on the corner, and knew one girl who spent her last five bucks on cigs when she hadn't eaten that day, so trust me, they are addictive!

How do we know it is that we are missing a cigarette and not a cold? Because we are all better when we light up--until we need the next one.

It's really hard to explain to a non-smoker. You get this feeling where something just isn't right. It's an uneasy almost anxious feeling but it's very subtle, unless something very very stressful has come up. You don't have to think about what you need to do to cure it. You're brain automatically sends out a message saying you need a cigarette. It's like pure instinct. It's not like we have to think long and hard about what we need to do, we just automatically grab our pack of cigarettes and many times we don't even realize what we're doing until we have to find our lighter!

I once smoked regulary, now on the weekends, and I did it just after "doing" something, so right after it ended. For instance I used to light one after going outta house, after eating, after arriving at a friends place, after getting out of the pool/lake/sea, after seeing a movie/episode of a series, after work, after gym, after school bla.

And of course when I was bored.
Now I just smoke when I drink alcohol, cause then it's almost impossible for me to resist...
