Usually lotion.....but If you really want to do it right. You go to your local body and bath store. It's a store that specializes in just bath stuff. They have lots of special sponges and oils there. Or perhaps if your broke like me, Walmart has some special things. They have different special aromatic message lotions. Like rasberry, piña colada, etc.....Anyway, usually they are kept in the section where women get there nail polish and stuff. Just take your time and look around. You'll find it.
Then what I do is put it in the microwave just before using it. Not too long though. Just enough to to make it a little better than warm. Not scalding though, because you and burn the skin. There are also several message rubbing techniques you can do. Giving a message is a process. It is a mind control thing too. If your giving the message it would probably help to put the person on a table or something. On a bed is very difficult and will give you lower back pain and a message needs no interruptions. It needs to be done slowly too. Your not just relaxing the body. Your relaxing the mind too. So go try that. You can look online for rubbing techniques. I have a book that I purchased.

Grapeseed oil scented with extracts. Upside is that it lets you give the best massages, downside is that you need to wash it off when you are finished. Walnut oil works well too.
If you are never going inside the body (if you are sticking with the back and shoulders) you can use almost anything--peppermint, vanilla, cinnamon. If you might touch mucous membrane (pink parts of the face and body), don't use anything spicy or citrus, stick with mint, vanilla, bananna, almond, and stuff like that.
