The best thing to do is remember, in most salons when you communicate what you want that doesn't mean that is what you will get. Alot of time it is due to miscommunication. What your Idea of an inch is may not be your stylist idea. I always make sure that I show my clients in a mirror exactly how much I am planning to take off before I start cutting. This way there is no coming back and saying well you took to much, because even after I have made that first cut, again I show what I just cut off, and ask if that looks like enough.
In any case, it is hard to do anything legally, because it is your word against theirs, but you can file a complaint with the owner of the business and depending on the circumstances, weather anyone else was working and knew what was going on, you may request a refund. Otherwise, I don't believe there is much you can do. Like I said depending on the circumstances and what the whole story is then, I really don't know.
Just remember when you go into a salon the next time to speak clearly and even demonstrate if nessary what it is that you want. Get the stylist to even repeat back to you what you have said to make sure that you both are on the same page. Believe it or not even the best of stylist have the worst days. Alot of people don't realize how stressful that the job is and what it takes to perform the kinds of services that we have to perform. Some days it seems no matter what you do, you just can't get it right. I am sorry for your misfortunate experience, but believe me; Stylist are just human, and humans do make mistakes.

I don't believe in this, it's just hair, it will grow back and it's only a mistake crap. Your appearance is important to you and anyone who doesn't know what they are doing shouldn't be workin in the field. Just like a doctor can't be allowed to make a mistake, or a pilot without getting sued or fired, so should people who you trust with your beauty.\
For everyone saying that, let me cut your hair about an inch short and see how great you feel.

well if you complained or filed a complaint with the owner....they should give you your money back...and out of good faith and to protect their own reputation....I would apologize to you, and offer you services for free. I doubt that she meant to do this....we all make mistakes and these things happen. But she should be offering you some complimentary services for your hair. I am assuming that she burnt your hair using teh curling iron. That is very possible to do...I have seen it happen more than once, but services were always offered to help rectify the problem. But mistakes like this happen. Here was my incident....had a client who bleached her hair by someone else....hair is poor condition. Told her all the possibilties what would be the best rout to go to ger her hair back to normal color....which was doing a series of lowlights....nope....she wanted all over color....she wanted it her natural color right now......know that she had been having her hair bleached for over a year....and this was going to be a shock. I also explained to her that the porosity of her hair was not going to be what we needed for all over color, and that the color on the ends may end up being completely different than what the scalp area.....I really did not want to do this, because I already knew that she was not going to like it and that it woudl be a problem....I went as far and grabbing teh owner and manager to try to talk her out of it....she would not hear of it...so he made her sign a waver.....any way to make a long sory a little shorter, it looked like crap. Went through everything to try to equal out the porosity at the bottom of her hair.....and she still would up looking freaky.....well she didn't like it...#1 it was a shock to her eyes #2 it did look gross....she would up paying a great deal of money because she did not listen and do what I suggested her do. But because she signed the waiver....we were protected, because I informed her of everything that would possibly and did happen. I did end up getting it to a beautiful color....but it cost her hundreds of dollars.

You can take her to court and you can turn her in to the better business bureau. You can also turn her in to the Cosmetology state board. What the"Master Stylist" up there said is a bunch of garbage. An inch is an inch ! What do you think the measuring comb is for?

Nope. Your hair will grow back, so just don't pay the $40. That simple. Just complain to the manager of the salon.

If you complain to the manager you may get your money back, but to press charges??? It is hair and will grow out! Accidents happen, just don't go back there!

If you live in America, you can sue people for anything. It also depends on what you've asked for. If you wanted a short cut, than no, but if you didn't ask for it, than you can sue the company. Or write to a paper with your before and after photos. Your story will gain publicity and you can really win on it - maybe money, or a good lawyer to help you sue them.

In small claims court you can if thats not what you asked for, but have you tried talking to the stylist after the fact? She may refund your money.
