Thinking about vacationing in Thailand this fall (late August, early September) but recently read that monsoon season starts around that time. What does this mean? Does it pour rain all the time? Would it make a vacation miserable?

The rainy or monsoon season starts in March to April and lasts to October or November. Last year, the season went from May to June, skipped July and august, started some in September and October and dwindled to November. I visited Bangkok in April, July and November last year. I have previously visited Thailand also in September. Maybe I have been lucky, it has only rained ONE day during my Sept. 04, April 05, July 05, April 06 and November 06 trips. I have been to Thailand 9 times.

It can pour rain all day and flood the CBD or central business district of Sukhumvit. That happened in May and June 2006 and I believe it happened in 2005. That is what my thai friends told me.

The worse rain I saw, it rained all morning once. From light rain to a heavy rain. The air gets dense with water. Almost impossible to breathe the air is so heavy with water. I have seen it come down in sheets in Florida, where you cannot see 5 feet in front of you. I do know the difference. It's a heavy rain at worse that I have seen.

Then again you may get lucky. Last year when I went in July, I was worried that the June rain would continue to July and it did not. Though it did rain one day and I just sat around and had a coffee or two before it finally let up and stopped around Noon.

Now you know why the rates may be good during that time of year It is because of the rainy season.

Good luck

Hi Laura, which part of Thailand do you plan to vacation in? The weather can be quite different even during the monsoon season in various parts of the country. The period that you mention is in the SW monsoonn period, so which meant that Phuket is more likely to be be hit by storm when the monsoon is passing over the Indian continent. However, it may be quite okay should a storm be brewing in the South China Sea, which may rather affect the eastern coastal areas like Koh Samui instead.

In general, most of Thailand has 2 season, the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season starts around the Thai New year in April and last through Nov. After that, is usually the dry season with little rain over most of the country.

So whether it will be pouring or dry. it will not be easy to tell. I had been in Thailand supposedly during the dry season and experienced a heavy downpour. So weather will not be that easy to foretell. Just have to try your when you get there.

Yes, you are right in the middle of the monsoon season, however it does not rain continueously. There are heavy downpours, sometimes daily, but then in clears up until the next day. You may get stranded at times if it rains so heavy that streets get flooded beyond passage. On the other hand you may just catch a spell where the rain is not that heavy.

If you plan on vacationing late August to early September, visit the Philippines instead. By that time, monsoon season has ended (or ending).
