How does easy acces by car affect the popularity of a tourist destination?

Enormously. Elderly people or people with disabilities are unable to walk long distances so the closer they can get the better. Oh and of course not forgetting lazy people!

easy, the easier access by any means, the more people are likely to visit, so more tourists, more money for those living and working there.
